BT Equipment Charge

Evening all

Just wondering if anybody has experienced the following and what they did if so.

My BT contract started on Jan 9th 2014 and when it came to renewal time they were very uncompetitive so I switched to Talk Talk with my connection with them beginning today (all up and running I may add too).

Today I have received two emails from BT - the first asking me to send the Hub 5 I have back to them - no issue doing this.
The second email advises me that due to my contract finishing early (9 days - that I will have paid for anyway with line rental and broadband fees) I will be sent a bill for £65 as an equipment charge.

Having read a bit around this it does seem like BT inform you that if you leave your contract early you will have this charge. My query I suppose is can they levy the charge (which they say is for equipment) and also ask for it to be sent back to them?

I'd clearly rather not pay the £65 but at least if I pay it and keep the hub I can recoup circa £35 from eBay for the sale of the Hub.

I will obviously be contacting them about this but just wanted to be armed with any anecdotal evidence anybody may have regarding this

Any advice appreciated. :)

Are the two emails from different departments?

It could be the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing.

If you do send back the Hub, do get a proof of postage.

    Look at this forum message.

It has the link to the BT representative in it. They maybe able to sort it all out for you.

  • Okay - thanks. I have contacted them. I'll update this thread with any results I get for other users future reference.

    Cheers!

For interest of anybody who comes across this thread in future - after not hearing back for 48 hours from the enquiry I sent to them I went onto the online chat facility.

I spoke to somebody who explained that if I sent the Hub back and sent them the postage reference numbers (returns bag and proof of postage number) then they would have the £65 charge waived from my final bill. I have done so and they have confirmed this to me in writing so fingers crossed when I get my final bill it is all sorted and I don't have to spend any time arguing it out with them.
