After looking at SCS and the like, we bought three Lay-z-boys from costco online. Very happy with them. We're costco members, but you don't have to be to shop online (though you'll pay a premium).
Less impressed with their people's assembly skills - I re-assembled them myself when I got home from work.0 -
If you don't know what to look for in a good sofa go to a store such as John Lewis or M&S first and ask plenty of questions about their products. Armed with this knowledge you can then enter the shark infested waters of the out of town retail shed!0

DFS and SCS, have been trading for years, lots of bad reviews BUT they are still in business. Why ?
Maybe a lot of people are happy with a cheap sofa and change it every few years. Look at their prices, a sofa for few hundred ...........John Lewis ? Mutiyork/ M&s , my fav Furniture Warehouse will cost lots more, last a lot longer. You get what you pay for.
I won't knock DFS and SCS.They have there place in the market.
Ps my way of telling a good sofa, Try and pick up one end.0 -
Dfs is ok but their stuff isn't that durable. Also a lot of their furniture is very large, although it doesn't look it in the shop, so you need to be careful to measure the sofa to make sure it will fit in your house.
I don't think I'd have another dfs sofa though. Our Next sofas seem to be much better.0 -

Avoid SCS like the plague. We bought a £3k lazboy sofa last year, have had nothing but problems and as they are made in China it takes months to get replacement parts. I wouldn't buy from them again. If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you always got!0 -
I used Furniture Village. Very happy with end result.0

I just bought a sofa at SCS recently and although I bought something in the sale I asked if there was any further discounting and the salesman spoke to the manager who authorised another 10% in order to beat a competitor. Haggled a bit longer and got close to 20% off the sale price. Took around 30 minutes in the shop to get them that low but they were keen not to lose out to another competitor so used that as the bargaining tool. I would say I was very blunt with them but I am never going to meet them again so not really bothered about what they thought about me, just told them the lower price will get my business as they are all made in the same factories in China and I was happy to wait another couple of weeks to save more money.
Personally rating the shops on how helpful their staff were I would put Sofaworks out on top as they took the time to explain all the differences in the leathers, gradings and how they would wear over the years. DFS and SCS were on a par with each other and Harveys were very poor. Went to 2 different Harveys stores and both were really poor on their knowledge and on knowing what they had available.0 -
We bought a corner sofa from Ikea about five years ago. Got to say it's been great. We got white covers for it and although it says dry clean only I bung them in the washing machine about once or twice a year and they come up like new.0

I will do my usual here and ask where you live? If you are in the Midlands I would suggest visiting WESTBRIDGE FURNITURE in Stoke On Trent. They manufacture for M&S and Next (factories in Deeside/North Wales I believe)
The shop in Stoke is a factory stop but they mainly sell cancelled orders. THeir prices are 50% of retail and they have the Next &U M&S catalogues on the counter so you can pick and choose. THey have hundreds of sofas in the warehouse that they will bring out for you to inspect once you have narrowed down your choice (you will probably find the fabric/leather you want on one sofa design and then ask if they have that finish on he design you want).
The last one we bought (M&S leather sofa) had a small graze on the arm. They said it would be fixed before delivery - they use the same company that work on the leather interiors at Bentley up the road in Crewe. When it arrived I looked really closely but then couldn't even remember which arm had the graze.
My mum went a few weeks ago on my recommendation and she was really impressed.0 -
We have just bought sofas from DFS got some ex display and arrived within 2 weeks. Nothing wrong with it as it was already half price plus we got another £500 off. We had our previous dfs sofas for 15 years and survived babies now teenagers as the mess they bring with them and a dog!0
