Just think of the consequences if they didn't. They'd end up as petrol runners for all those stupid and lazy drivers that run out and there'd be no staff to deal with breakdowns. They aren't errand boys and some have to be educated to that fact.

You'll find that this will be in the T&Cs of most (if not all) recovery companies. The charge can be waived at their discretion i.e. if this was due to circumstances beyond your control but even if if long tailbacks you are never that far from a petrol station.

well they were in the back end of wales led to a cul de sac by tomtom where there was a petrol station 7 years earlier.

basically they were going on a teepee experience in remote wales, got there late, no one there, locked up so they had to come home hence running out of petrol. it was just a nightmare chain of events. just found an rac site where someone reports bout a job they went to helping someone out with petrol, no mention of charges. lazyness is one thing but abergerfenny or whereever it was at 1am is another

Most recovery guys can tell if someone has run out of fuel because they are ever ever ever ever so slightly more intelligent than a full blown mad monkey.

The guys can tell if someone has genuinely run out of fuel through no fault of their own.

If what you post is true than it is a bit harsh to front the £90.
  • The teepee place is in Machynlleth, which is just up from Aberystwyth. They have petrol stations. Abergavenny is 20 mins from Newport and has supermarkets with petrol stations. As does many towns in between. Sorry, but even mid wales, despite all the myths, have petrol stations and Machynlleth to Abergavenny is about three hours. They must've passed stations in between.
If they are seriously quering the charge, they could always take it up with RAC customer services. They might get it back as a goodwill gesture.

Some people think Wales is as desolate as the Sahara....

Once guy asked "do they have a TGI's in Wales'. I said "no, they dont, TGI food is processed and genetically modified which enevitably will end up giving you deseases, so the Welsh assembly refused TGI's however you can get a TGI's in Bristol "

    Drives me potty!

There is no petrol station that I know of open after 9pm between aberystwyth and porthmadog (about 60 mile stretch) but most sensible people fill their tank before a long journey. My dad works for a breakdown company and gets called out all the time to people out of petrol but they dont get charged for the call out as fasr as I know, just for the petrol.

( am about 20 miles from Machynlleth, and went to uni in swansea but travelled home at weekends so know there arent many petrol stations about!)

saying that if your used ot city living you can forget that 24 hour stations are not the norm everywhere.
learned this when i worked up by oban.
unfortunatly the breakdown companies need to ensure they are not used as petrol tankers as said previously.
its the same if you dont have a spare wheel and get a flat, you will be charged for that. (unless no spare wheel is fitted from the factory)

In a diesel car you probably have at least 50 miles of fuel after the warning light comes on. Be serious - the OP's friend was clearly a muppet to run out.

Everyone with nous knows fuel costs more in the middle of nowhere - why on earth not fill up before leaving the beaten track?
