just want to keep fit

  • Thanks YORKSHIRELASS.

Yes, I've always been on the skinny side of normal, and people generally tend to assume that therefore I must be fit and healthy!! I know I'm not really (although I now weigh a stone and a half more than I did 10 years ago, and I'm definitely better for it - I don't feel the cold as much, and my clothes actually fit!!)

I think c25k will work for me as there's a built-in progression, but there's flexibility too.

On my rest days I will try to fit in a walk (although it's raining cats and dogs here at the moment, and I actually have things I need to do out there, so it looks like I'm just going to have to get wet), and I've also signed up to Pilates again, once a week.

Are you actually in Yorkshire, or just from Yorkshire? I'm Yorkshire born and bred, but moved away in 1980 - finally made it back here in 2010.

Running and cycling may be? Download a running plan via runnersworld even if you don't enter a race it'll give you an idea of the miles you need to cover over a week. Runs vary from easy, steady, intervals, tempo etc. I know the great British weather can be an issue, but I've been running for years and can honestly say that very few running days have been lost due to bad weather (ice is the main barrier). As per above post I also do sits ups, press ups, hover etc from home and it works for me. Whilst you're sat there debating you're not doing so crack on!! Best of luck.

I can recommend HIIT (high intensity interval training). Short sharp bursts which gets the ticker pumping. Lots of videos on Utube, so no need for expensive classes or equipment :)
  • Well, I started c25k yesterday, today I had errands to run so walked instead of driving (brisk walking for the best part of an hour, with occasional stops to drop off dry cleaning, post a letter etc etc). This evening I did the first Pilates class for a while.

And tomorrow will be day 2 of c25k. Looking forward to it.

Thanks for all the ideas and support.

  • Pilates was hard work last night - previous instructors have done more reps of each exercise, and concentrated on getting the breathing right. This lady jumped from one to another, and didn't mention breathing much at all.

Still, I survived it, and did Day Two of c25k this afternoon. I'd forgotten how much I enjoy running, and I'd forgotten how much I enjoy pushing myself. Actually looking forward to the next run on Friday.

Get a Fitbit, it encourages you to move around more.

I aim for 10,000 steps a day. When I first got mine I was shocked as to how little I actually move all day. I do around 30,000 miles a year in my job, and the only walking I was doing was walking to the car, drive to my next appointment, walk into the building, back into the car....

Now I do little things to increase my activity - park further away from the door, use the stairs instead of the lift etc. If I haven't achieved my 10,000 steps by 7pm I watch the TV whilst marching on the spot!

    It really makes a difference!

My 2015 swimming motto - A mile a day. That's my aim to average over the 365 days.

64 lengths per day and some days I have to do 90 or 100 if I've missed a day to keep my average up.

This week I have managed a couple of 100 length days so I am far in front of the game despite the pool being full of New Year Resolutionists.
