I was given a Nokia Lumia 530 as a gift. I was shocked to see texts coming through with the internet charges I had used by just putting in the sim card and setting the phone up. Total £50. Why was I not told that there would be these charges?

Your network contract or PAYG sim has charges for mobile data depending upon what product .
You are asking where the data charges come from??.
Usual for this same question is that you have mobile data switched on and have downloaded updates/ apps .
But even so £50 is a lot but as we have no information on what your network product is its impossible to reply .
Who where you expecting to tell you that the internet is chargeable .0 -
I am with 3. I am on contract but as my old phone did have apps etc I did not bother to have internet included in it. I would have thought that the staff in the 3 shop would have explained everything to us. We are not all young wizz kids.0

What have the OP missed in the instructions?
Also, it was a gift, not a purchase.0
