Yes because I clicked on the desktop icon0 -
It would seem that the desktop tile (Start page) is not really a link to the desktop.
Suggestion:-
Unpin the Desktop tile from the Start page. Shut down. Wait about 10 seconds before booting again (to definitely clear all the memory) then pin the Desktop to the start page again.
Hope that will restore the Desktop tile.
Windows 8 really sucks - can't wait for Win 10.Warning: In the kingdom of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.

Another way is to use the keyboard shortcut <WindowsKey> <D> , pressing both keys together, to get to the Desktop.
(Where <WindowsKey> is the one near the bottom [STRIKE]right[/STRIKE] left of your keyboard, with the windows 'flag' logo)
You may need to press that combination a couple of times to get a clear view of the desktop.0 -

To show or hide the Recycle Bin on the desktop
- Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, then tap Search.
(If you're using a mouse, point to the bottom-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, then click Search.) - Enter desktop icons in the search box, then tap or click Show or hide common icons on the desktop.
- In the Desktop Icon Settings dialogue box, do one of the following:
- To hide the Recycle Bin, untick the Recycle Bin checkbox.
- To show the Recycle Bin, tick the Recycle Bin checkbox.
- Tap or click OK.
Note- Even when the Recycle Bin is hidden, deleted files are still stored there temporarily until you choose to permanently delete them or restore them.
Or ... install Classic Shell and Recycle Bin is where it should be, and always has been.
