My Nexus 4 phone is still running 4.4.2

Presumably because you have chosen not to install several OTA updates that will have been offered to you since then.

Samsung are renowned for being slow on updates. Any Google devices like the nexus tend to get them first which is why I could update my nexus 7 to 5.01 with no problems at all with that version of android. We have a couple of note 4 at home and no updates to version 5 and this is a new phone.

Not been offered OTA updates AFAIK - can I manually do it?

I fund updating often brings problems!!

Or it is rooted. Or it is not running the stock software.

Settings -> About phone -> Check for updates. It's not hard to find.

I don't think the update will happen automatically but you should be notified that the new software is available to be downloaded and applied. I'm very surprised that it hasn't happened to your phone already unless you had the Check for updates turned off (although I'm not sure if it's possible to do this, I can't see an obvious way).

Each morning when I switch on, there are always several offers to 'update' some of my apps.
Occasionally I will let them update, but more often than not, I just ignore the message.
Maybe that's what happened with the OTA update!

Separate question .... the old Huawei G300 is still working (with our overseas sim in) Should/Can I update that too???
