Do I need a mac code if my contract has expired ?

Talk talk contract has expired. I'm usually fairly good at negotiating but nothing will shift the people I speak to, so I'm planning to move - talk talk say I don't need a mac code I just tell my new provider and it gets sorted. I'm wondering if this is really true-can anyone advise? Thought to go with ee but now that deal has changed I'm relooking at options - talk talk is not a great connection so no desire to stay with them at the new prices they are charging me.." Aghhhhhh
