The free programs work just fine. There are also Office web apps online offered alongside Hotmail. Between the two I don't see any need for a paid version.0

Open Office, Libre Office and WPS (formally Kingsoft Office) can all save in the Microsoft .doc format. The first 2 need to have their default SaveAs changed from .odt (in settings) while WPS uses .doc by default.
I use Libre Office for spreadsheet returns for a major UK charity and have no problems with formatting when using .xls.

Neil49 how do I change setting ?
That's good to know as I have open office, put simply could you tell me how to change the default setting for 'save as' to .doc

Just thought of something else. If you get sent something on word via email can you open this in open office? Can you also edit it?
