Why no iPlayer on Android tablets?

I currently have a visitor from Spain who is trying to download iPlayer onto her Android tablet to enable her to download programmes to view at a later date. I have a Windows tablet and this is possible, but when we try to download the player onto her tablet this is not possible. Why not?

  • Probably because she has a Spanish account on google , guessing of course, I don't have an android tablet, but try logging as you to google play on her tablet , but she won't be get iplayer content back in Spain i would imagine unless she uses a VPN or some such. I can't get iPlayer or lottery on the continent without.

I can watch iplayer on my android tablet, so it's not the android / iplayer that is incompatible.

Because Google knows the tablet is NOT in the UK so it won't show UK Specific apps in Google Play.

  • The Google store doesn't provide an iplayer equivalent when she tries to find an iPlayer app. There is only a Media Player app, which only provides links to foreign BBC apps. (On my Windowns tablet, I simply go to the iPlayer page, select a programme and will be given the possibility to download it. When she does the same, there is no download option.)

(Although I do have a Google account, I cannot currently get into it to allow her to use it, since Google is unable to send me a temporary code via SMS for reason only known to it!!! So this option is not currently available to me...)

I doubt she will be able to use it as her email address / location will be recognised as Spanish.

Go. On the play store and click on BBC Iplayer download that main programme. Once you have done this then click on the media type you want.
On my sons tablet we have BBC iPlayer, BBC iPlayer radio and BBC iPlayer TV.

So it does work, but I honestly don't think it will work with hers

Because Spanish viewers cost the same to support as British ones, but haven't paid for the programmes to be made. The BBC don't want British licence fee prayers subsidising Global viewers when that would kill international sales of BBC programmes (which in fact subsidise the licence fee!). Android is perfectly capable, I watch iPlayer on my android phone just fine.

With the EHIC system (was the E111 card) if you've paid/are eligible for access to healthcare in one EU country then you can access healthcare in any EU country you travel in.

The European Publishers Council wants EU TV without borders and has been lobbying MEPs.

Until sensible laws arrive people will continue to use VPNs, SmartDNS and Torrents to get what they ought to have a right to anyway.
