Not sure what to make of this one.

I won and bought a 2nd hand CB radio and messaged the seller that I would pick it up as it's local, and would pay cash. The delivery charge was almost as much as the item.

He messaged me back and said no problem. I phoned him today to confirm that I was picking up and what was the address.

I duly collected it and gave him the cash, job done or so I thought. I just looked at my ebay account to see a message from ebay asking me to pay for the goods, which I thought was strange because the auction only finished on Christmas Day and I actually marked the goods as paid when I got back today.

Then I noticed that I had a second message from ebay, saying the seller has opened an unpaid item case.

A few things come to mind, from the banal, I didn't think ebay jumped on a case that quickly. To more importantly, what is he playing at and what does he hope to gain?

How has he opened the case (I've never done it to I'm not au fait with what hoops you have to jump through, usually ebay keep trying to tell you to sort it out with the other party and only after a week do they step in).

Is this something he could of accidently done, knowing ebay they usually put a few reminders in your way. I hope it's a silly mistake that can be rectified, but I'm struggling to see how he could have accidently done it.

I'm also struggling to see what he has to gain out of it if it is deliberate, it's only a £16 item, so costs aren't great. He can't get any money back, because his whole case is that he hasn't received it.

So far, I've resisted the what the ******* hell are you playing at, maybe you have forgotten I know exactly where you are.

I would very much appreciate some feedback and guidance on this one, obviously I'd like to put it to bed with the minimum of fuss, but I'm certainly not accepting a NPB strike.

  • The seller is probably trying to avoid the 10% final value fees.

You should tell ebay what the situation is and make sure that they know the seller is trying to avoid paying their cut to them and ask them to look at the ebay messages.

It'll be automatic. You can set it to open a case for non payment automatically, the default setting is automatic, so the seller likely doesn't know.

Even though I've marked it as payment sent (prior to eBay's message) and the Pound sign is highlighted. I can understand ebay sending me an automatic reminder, but opening a NPB case after 48 hours?

    "Hello (me),
s.gifSeller XXXXXX has opened an unpaid item case for Cb Radios. They opened the case because they haven’t received payment for the item.

s.gifPlease pay by 31-Dec-14, so the seller can ship the item to you, otherwise, the seller can cancel this order."

NPB cases can be opened after 48 hours. Either automatically or manually by the seller.

Selecting paid doesn't stop them being opened, otherwise any buyer could circumvent the system, buy anything and never pay and never get a NPB.

You're not going to get any answers until you message your seller. I wouldn't initially make any threats about "knowing where they live" as it may be innocent.

Well, I've sent a polite message, and omitted the bit about disconnecting his head from the rest of the body.

I have a worry, that I think that he is the sort of person that only ever looks at his ebay when he is selling or contemplating buying and there's a good chance he won't be seeing it before the 31st deadline.

I have got a mobile number, but I'm loathed to call it in case he really has opened this case.

seems a very odd attitude to me. Especially as you have mentioned threatening seller with 'I know where you live'. Surely simpler to speak on phone than face-to-face?

That was tongue in cheek, and if you actually read my post, you will see that I haven't threatened the seller. Sometimes it helps in these situations if you have a sense of humour.

Unfortunately threats of violence on an open forum are rarely picked up as 'humour' and may well mean you get less help than you would otherwise.

Phone the seller- if on day 3 after case has been opened you have not managed to get a response by either email or phone pay by paypal. That will close the case. Then wait a few days and start an INR and reclaim your money.

A bit long winded but it saves you getting a NPB strike and will at least get the sellers attention.

I suspect that rather than anything dodgy going on as has already been mentioned, the NPB case opened automatically and seller is unaware of it.

As has been said, there are no hoops, the system does it automatically or the seller has done it to avoid fees or by accident.

As a seller, this has happened to me. It's automatic, and a little embarrassing when the buyer has already paid, but it happens.
