Comparing my annual energy uesage from april to april with 2 suppliers i noticed that with my current supplier i used 33% more gas BUT 26% less electricity according to their figures -is this normal or is there something wrong with the figures ?
I have a smart meter and my current supplier bills were higher from £90 of old to £125
Also after changing suppliers i failed to get my final bill from my previous supplier -so i had to call them and was told i was in debit .
Am i liable for the outstanding bill -given that had i not requested it i would have avoided it ?
Thxs

Have you actual meter readings - not £'s - for the periods ?

When you change suppliers your old supplier is provided with the closing read and in electricity this is done by your new suppliers agent. Until this happens they can't produce a final bill. And yes you are liable to pay it. You don't say when you switched or from which supplier.

  • Smart meters are typically unique to a particular company. When you switched it is likely that the second company has had to use them in non-smart mode.

The % readings are from kwh useage - not money.I switched from E-on who had smart meter to Sainsburys.
I'm really just trying to specifically ascertain whether 33% more gas BUT 26% less electricity can be used.

Could you detail the actual readings for us please ?

The Eon smart meter ceases to be smart with Sainsburys and you will need to submit readings to stop getting estimated bills

As already stated, details of the actual kWh usage for the periods concerned are required if you are to get more informed responses.
But yes it is possible for gas usage to increase over a year and electricity to decrease at the same time. Gas usage is typically for heating, so heavily influenced by the weather. Electricity less so, maybe you were just more efficient with your electricity usage over a year. Maybe you changed out an electric shower for one running off the hot water supply, heated by gas. Maybe your new supplier is using estimated readings....

What dates do those figures cover? Also, were any estimated readings used at any point, presumably not with E.On and your smart meters, but if it covers a period before the smart meters were installed, there could have been some adjustments made. Also, since your change in supplier, have any estimated readings been used, as the smart meters will no longer be "smart".
From those figures, I would assume that gas does your heating and hot water (possibly a hob as well). They don't look unreasonable for annual usage, but it's clearly the change you are concerned about.

Afaik those are not estimates as they were annual usage statements and they were in keeping with smart meter readings. They cover April to April.

So if the first figures are 2012/13, and the second 2013/14, then in my case, with gas hot water, heating and hob plus electric shower, my figures were similar but the opposite way round for gas, with approximately 24,000kWh and 18,000kWh respectively. Electricity was pretty even at around 4,500kWh each year. I put down the lower gas usage to the mild winter we had last year. Maybe you ran your heating more last winter than you did the year before.
Your figures don't look wildly out though, just take regular (weekly perhaps at first) readings from now on and monitor it more closely if you want to explain your usage pattern.
