I actually thought the AA warranty through CG was pretty good, very clear and comprehensive - I didn't buy it! :D

Do you already have Car Warranty from another place in mind, or just don't need it?

I will most probably cancel it tomorrow morning, then probably give AA a call directly and ask how much it would cost directly from them. Anywhere else I can try?

The guy at Car Giant said that they don't have the full pack available yet for the Gold Warranty from AA but has the terms and conditions which is the most important.

    What is not covered
    • Any customer excess as detailed in the schedule.
    • The cost of Components listed as excluded.
    • Impact or accidental damage.
    • General maintenance or serviceable items.
    • Wear and Tear where the Vehicle is over 5 years old and has covered more than 60,000 miles.
    • Faults which existed prior to the commencement of this insurance or that could be covered by any other warranty/guarantee/insurance.
    • Damage caused by overheating, freezing, corrosion or the intrusion of harmful substances (for example the ingress of water), use of an incorrect grade of fuel or oil, or lack of antifreeze, lubrication or servicing.
    • Fault which were on the Vehicle at the time of purchase, or caused by the result of inadequate servicing or as a result of faulty workmanship.

Some even say that for the £899 that I've paid for 3 years, I should just get a refund and keep the money and if there is any problems use that money to fix it, is that the right thinking or not?

It really depends on you and your attitude to risk. Do you plan to do many miles? Do you plan to keep the vehicle for a long time? Do you have savings to pay for repairs or a large credit card limit? Is the car vital for your job? Etc etc.

Get quotes online for warranties. I think that £300pa is OK for an extended warranty. You might find your car costs loads more to warrant privately through warranty companies.

The only reason that I didn't buy it was that it was a 3rd car so not vital to have cover if it was off the road.

I would get a refund and stick the money in the bank for a rainy day.

Of the £899 warranty the dealer is probably getting a £300 backhander. So how likely are they to pay out if they've only got £175 a year from you?

    That's certainly what I'd do.

Warranty companies are doing this to make money. Even if the whole £899 was used to pay claims (which as above it's not) then how likely does that make it for a car to have a fault in the 3 years that qualifies to be covered?

Out of 10 cars if one car has a £1500 fault and the other 9 have none then the warranty company has made their money.

Overall cars are pretty reliable but it's not in their interest to tell you that.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

We don't do many miles or go outside London very often. Just commuuting to work and going shopping ect.. I doubt we do more than 10k miles a year. I'd say we plan to keep it for 2 years then sell it privately. Savings to pay for repairs? I was hoping that £899 would be enough in an account somewhere if need be, otherwise the AA Gold would prove worth it with as many claims as I like.

A diesel seems an odd choice for that sort of use.

You may find you need some provision for repairs.

We had a Mercedes before it was a C180 Kompressor 1.8 and we found ourselves topping up Petrol quite often, so after keeping that Merc for 6 months I sold it on GumTree for £250 less than I bought it for. Because I didn't want to rush into anything I bought a small hatchback for under £1,000 and used that for a few months, recently sold that as well for a good price to a 19yr old kid and on the weekend picked up this Merc on sale hopefully fuel consumption will be decent on this seeing as it's got a bigger engine and it's Diesel, also NOT Kompressor.

It's got a Sport mode but I won't be using that much, maybe try it out here and there, but will leave it on Economy.
