Told you I didn't know much about cameras!
In hindsight would you go for a different make?0 -
A different make than what?0

Than you one you bought? A Fujifilm?0

Sorry, I thought you meant, would I recommend something different to the SLR you mentioned in your OP.
No, I wouldn't choose something different than the Fujifilm.
The price was good, and it has features I like, such as the 50X Zoom, and the viewfinder.
Having been a 35mm SLR user, for several decades, I prefer a viewfinder to a screen.
The only time I use the screen, is when shooting over crowds, or from a tripod.
Just a thought but, instead of spending a couple of hundred on a top of the range camera, have you considered starting a little lower down the range, and getting one each?
I think something like this would be plenty good enough, and you can always trade up later.

FWIW we bought our DD2 a Nikon D3200 for Xmas, with 18-55mm detachable lens and a 55-200mm zoom lens.
In fact it was this bundle here we got.0 -
£340 is, IMHO, a lot of money to spend, on a camera for a beginner.0

I'd be considering strongly what kind of actual camera you want, it does sound as if a bridge camera or travel zoom camera would be better for you than an SLR.
I've got both types (Panasonic make), and they are both fantastic cameras. The travel zoom tends to get used more, as I always carry it with me, as it can fit in my handbag, however it doesn't have a viewfinder, which is where the bridge camera comes into it's own.
Whatever type you end up going for, make sure you get one with a viewfinder. The new Panasonic TZ60 has a viewfinder, check it out and also see if there are any others in the travel zoom category, if you should want a more compact camera.

Some models with viewfinders.

If you are looking for a SRL (yep, I know it should be SLR and that is the point!!) then you should certainly be thinking bridge at this time.
Many things to learn about photography before splashing out on a DSLR that may well spend more time in a cupboard than being put through it's paces. If you will spend more time in Auto mode than anything else then bridge will probably be sufficient.
