Selfridges sale purchase..exchange only no refund..can they do this?

  • thanks everyone, i'll hang my head in shame and say I spent 460 on a handbag (SMH) the shop assistant did mumble something while I was paying but it was chaos in Selfridges yesterday and I just wanted to pay and get out. The sales refund/return policy is different to the standard one, sale items can only be exchanged within 7 days. I have considered taking it back for an exchange...but with 460 to spend i'll have to spend all day in the store looking for items I actually need. The only good outcome from all of this was that it prompted me to do a clear out and now I have a load of items to sell on ebay to make some extra cash :)

No boxing day sales for me next year...especially Selfridges...but looks like I will be there tomorrow :(
  • They might not allow it, but why not see if you can exchange the handbag for Selfridges gift vouchers.

If they will do this then you can either use the vouchers as gifts for other people or use them yourself and you won't be rushed to find something else to get instead of the bag as you could spend them gradually.

What bag is it? If it is a decent brand you may be able to sell it.

Exchange the bag for gift vouchers. Sell gift vouchers - you'll be able to recover 80-90% of the value of the bag.

Alternatively, exchange the item for a non-sale item then return the non-sale item at a later date for a refund.

There are many things you could do here to recover the money - if you're not 100% happy with the purchase it's not worth 460.

Almost certainly won't work as retailers refund based on the means of the original purchase so will just lead to another credit note/vouchers.
  • Got my money back yesterday :)
