Selfridges sale purchase..exchange only no refund..can they do this?

I got a little carried away at the sales yesterday and brought a handbag from the Selfridges sale...after a lot of thinking last night I decided that I would return the bag for a refund in the 7 days allowed. But I read the receipt this morning and it states that I can only exchange the item within 7 days...no refunds :(

I'm very angry at myself for losing control at the sale but even angrier at Selfridges, can they do this?

Help me please :/

Selfridges are actually offering you more than they legally have to for a change of mind. It's very common for retailers to alter their returns policy during sales.
  • no spending for the next 2 months for me :(:(

    Thanks for your help guys

You could try selling the bag to recoup some of the costs.

According to its website, Selfridges' refund policy is:
We want you to be able to buy with confidence. That is why we are happy to offer a full refund or exchange if you are not 100 per cent happy with your purchase, provided that you return it in saleable condition within 14 days along with proof of purchase.

I don't think adding a get out to the receipt, which is something you receive after the purchase, is good enough. It's something you should have been made aware of beforehand. Maybe they had notices on display about it?

Is that their Sale refund policy? Most stores have a different returns policy on sale items and display it at the till points.

Does that policy state change of mind returns on sale items or does it state sales items cannot be returned/returned unless faulty?

Just curious as in my own experiences, I've found stores displaying such signs tend to use wording that results in the signs being illegal.

Of course, we don't have a great selection of shops/retailers in our high street :D
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride
  • Just to be clear, did you buy it in the shop or online?

    It is.

If stores have a different sale policy they should make that policy clear to customers before a purchase is made.

    In-store signs are probably sufficient.

Maybe Selfridges had these but the OP missed them.

I bought two tops in New Look yesterday and was categorically told (as was every other customer whilst I was there) that sale items were only returnable for refund or exchange. I exchanged one of mine this morning.

Perhaps the OP could return it and exchange for gifts for friends/family for next Christmas or items needed for the house?
