If I went to £300 - would that other Dell still be the best option recommended?"There is no medicine like hope, no incentive so great, and no tonic so powerful as expectation of something better tomorrow." - Orison Swett Marden0
-
I'd hesitate on calling it the best option as the options out there are vast.0

Alternatively, you could go down the Cashback route with this Lenovo with a final price of £249.99 or even this one for £299.98 if it suited.0 -
I have had a lenovo for 2 years- it has been good. go for the fastest ghz one, for 299. It is also upgradeable to 16gb of memory, which is big. that lets you use multiple tabs etc and should do most things - except gaming.0

Still waiting for Currys to respond to my complaint. Am on the phone to them now.
But my other original laptop looks like it's being written off. They're going to confirm the final figure on Monday, but it looks like around £400. So it will be easier to get something decentish with that I hope."There is no medicine like hope, no incentive so great, and no tonic so powerful as expectation of something better tomorrow." - Orison Swett Marden0 -
Finally got through to someone decent at Currys and to apologise for all the trouble they're giving me 10% off any laptop I order from them.
Obviously it restricts were I can purchase it though, but still very helpful."There is no medicine like hope, no incentive so great, and no tonic so powerful as expectation of something better tomorrow." - Orison Swett Marden0 -
10% isn't much from a £200 odd laptop, so I could use the £400 to get a laptop from Currys with 10% off, and still get a cheaper one elsewhere."There is no medicine like hope, no incentive so great, and no tonic so powerful as expectation of something better tomorrow." - Orison Swett Marden0

Just to confirm I've sorted the cheaper laptop. Thanks for much for your input everyone, it was really helpful.
So I now need to sort the more expensive one. They should be confirming on Monday the right-off value plus compensation for multiple failed repairs. It should be just over £400.
If I go to Currys I get 10% off, so I've been looking there. The one with the best specs that I can see is a Toshiba. There are two almost identical, one black, one white.
The specs are Intel® Core™ i5-4210U Processor (1.7 GHz, 2.7 GHz with TurboBoost, 3 MB cache), 8GB RAM, 1TB storage.
The only difference I see is the graphics card. One has AMD Radeon™ R7 M260 (2 GB), the other Intel HD Graphics 4400.
I'm not sure what the turboboost thing is on the processor either.
What are people's thoughts on this please? Good value for money? Or could do better?"There is no medicine like hope, no incentive so great, and no tonic so powerful as expectation of something better tomorrow." - Orison Swett Marden0 -
And the link to the laptop is: http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/toshiba-satellite-l50-b-1p1-15-6-laptop-black-10011276-pdt.html"There is no medicine like hope, no incentive so great, and no tonic so powerful as expectation of something better tomorrow." - Orison Swett Marden0

There is a Lenovo available, but it's £100 more than the Toshiba. Specs are Intel® Core™ i5-4210U processor (1.7 GHz, 2.7 GHz with TurboBoost), 8GB ram, 1TB hard drive, NVIDIA 820M graphics.
£549 vs £449 for the Toshiba. But is it more reliable?"There is no medicine like hope, no incentive so great, and no tonic so powerful as expectation of something better tomorrow." - Orison Swett Marden0
