I personally (having had too many bad experiences) try to avoid "refurbished" laptops and tablets.

If you want something that's more likely to be reliable, buy new but go for "last year's model" by a known brand.

I've not had any problems before getting a refurb, but understand if you've had bad experiences you would be put off!

The problem is I don't know what last years models were. I'm looking at known brands. I've had bad experiences with Asus, Packard Bell/HP came with loads of crap.

I've never had an Acer or Lenovo, and never been able to afford Sony, etc.

Thanks, that one does look good. John Lewis are out of stock though.

Purchased the Asus laptop that was recommended above, but from Currys.

It was slow - particularly when opening tabs, or when searching (not the internet connection, the laptop itself), and then at the weekend it stopped registered the power cable and died.

Phoned Currys and was told I had to take it into a shop for a refund. Was surprised as not everyone has a shop - which is why they buy online. I do have one close, but have mobility problems, which makes visiting shops difficult. So I had to find someone to take me, to help me get my wheelchair out. The person on the phone said it could be returned within 28 days for any reason.

Anyway, the whole visit was very frustrating. The first member of staff said it had to be returned within 21 days, and only if faulty so it would have to be tested first. He went off and took ages, before coming back to say the laptop was dead, it wasn't the cable. He then said there were no more laptops, so I would need to choose another and he'd get a sales guy to help me.

That sales guy was spectacularly unhelpful, first showing me laptops clearly nothing like the one I'd bought (very expensive, or small notebooks.) He just seemed to be panicking and pointing at things, and then being extremely patronising.

Anyway, the only ones available were £100 more at least, so I asked for a refund. It took him over 25 minutes, and he only managed to refund the laptop - not the sales plan. He insisted it had to be done in store, but I had to leave for an appointment. Came back later, struggling to get wheelchair out in pouring rain. Same guy served us, still trying to refund us until eventually a manager cut in to say it had to be done over the phone.

    Argh!

So I need another laptop - no idea what to get, sales are over. Willing to pay up to £250.

    Please help me!

A few different things, at the moment it takes half an hour to turn on, and then won't load Windows. That wasn't the fault when it went in.

And I want a backup laptop for other reasons anyway, a tablet isn't what I'm looking for.

at that price range, the processor isn't going to be top notch (but will work ok), an i3 is better if you can stretch to 299
