How many miles should I get out a Mercedes C class (c180k)
Considering buying a Mercedes c class c180k with 60,000 miles on the clock (2007) - how many miles should a well looked after engine etc give before serious money needs to be spent on repairs? 150k? I know it's hard to answer but some sort of guidance would be appreciated as I'm clueless and a bit worried 60k is high. Thanks

Which engine exactly?
Given regular oil and filter changes you should be looking at well over 250K.
After that it's likely to need fuel pump, injectors etc.
Many M-Bs are scrapped because the body has rusted out.0 -
Hi, thanks for the reply, this is the engine details:
Engine power 143 bhp Engine size 1796 cc
I did suspect that MB were good quality so should give high mileage, but just wasn't sure and someone commented 60k+ was "high" ie could result in lots of costs in next few years. Might just go for it!0 -
Since the early 2000's many people have believed that Mercedes started to engineer in an expected life of 150k miles.
And to be honest a C Class of that age (2007) was made a little bit before build quality began to see improvements.
As mentioned above rust can be a problem on some Mercs but I think things were better by 07.
Car Mechanics Mag have a current project car which is a C Class coupe, its a Kompressor model but not sure which model, C230K perhaps.
There was a 2009 E 220 cdi on eBay recently which had over 600k on it and looked to have plenty more life in it.
Though it was used to transport flight crews round the UK so will have spent minimal time in harsh urban conditions.
If you look after.any car with regular servicing with quality oil and filters it will last.
Have a read of that article as it had info on common problems.
Mercedes do have issues with Torque convertors failing, everyone I know that has owned an S Class has replaced a TQ.0 -
Coincidently, I had a 54' plate Mercedes Benz C200K saloon before I bought the VW Golf in late 2009. For those 5 years it was an absolute monstrosity in bills, most of which were electric.
However, when it worked properly it was a pleasure to drive; smooth, comfortable, relaxing and powerful. I don't regret getting it, just a lot of small niggles that spoilt the car as a whole. Mechanically speaking I didn't have much problems but the car only reached about 30k before I got rid of it. Tyres and general maintenance were around 1 and half times more to what I pay for my current car, so its definitely leaning towards the expensive side.
Not sure about the C180K but I can' imagine them being that different, although an '07 plate may see the succeeding model to the one I had.0 -
If it has been well looked after, a full service history is a minimum of what you need to see, bills for work is even better, it should be reliable. If it is an auto, ensure fluid changes have been done, 4 yearly or 40,000 miles.
I've a Merc which has done just shy of 50,000 miles. It has regular maintenance and it drives as well as when I picked it up with 3,000 on the clock.0 -
The c180 is not a Merc engine it's a Mitsubishi engine.
Lived its previous life in some lower spec Volvo v40's (gdi) and Mitsubishi own cars.
Not on the whole a bad engine, but it wont do the miles of a Real Merc diesel unit.I do Contracts, all day every day.0 -
If it is the Mitsi engine, IIRC it has a single row timing chain which will need replacement @ around 80k miles.
Proper Merc engines last years if maintained well, but not always plain sailing, some may require CHG at anything over 100k depending on the model, if maintained well they don't actually wear out, but they are a champagne car and you won't get the full benefit of the long life potential on a lemonade budget.
220 Diesels are as good a bet as anything, expect 400k+ miles without much in the way of problems if you look after them.0 -
What is CHG?0

Around 2003 I ran a 2002 C230K Put 80K on it in 2 years and It was pretty much reliable. Needed a leaky Diff Seal sorting and a brake light switch in the time I ran it. Sold it with 140K on the clock and It drove like it did when I bought It.0
