HELP! Confused - ISP and packages

Options
We've been with TALK TALK for the last 8yrs due to laziness. They've offered me a free router, unlimited broadband and telephone time for £24 with no increase with a new contract. We tend not to use the landline phone much and the wifi connection and streaming speed is sporadic - we cant even watch iPlayer or Netflix on the TV using Roku streaming stick. Which magazine recommends Utility Warehouse, John Lewis and Zen internet as being the best for speed, connection and customer service support - has anyone used them? Also living in a village means we're not on Fibre and at best we get 12mg download - Any suggestion how we can improve the speed? Should we buy our own router?

Your speed will depend on the line length and quality. If its slow then speak to them and see if it can be increased without dropping the connection.

Swapping providers on a poor line will not improve anything.

12mb download should be plenty for iplayer and netflix etc. My old connection was 4mb and had no issues.

The router is unlikely to make any difference. If your using wireless then that maybe your bottleneck. Connect to the router with wires to test the speed.

On hubs: I just had a long running saga with BT who did all sorts of things (eventually) to my line to improve speeds. Finally they sent me a new hub to replace my old one (prob 5 years old) and that has done the trick, and the speed has gone from a woeful 1-2Mbps to 8-12Mbps. (Apart from the fact I think they sent me a dodgy hub - it keeps on dropping. But not to worry, I intend to get new ISP).

On new ISPs: I was just about to go with Which's recommended John Lewis BUT... a big BUT, their sales team tried to sell me PlusNet as JL broadband is essentially PlusNet, warts and customer service and all. So I backed out. I have written to JL to ask them why they are doing this? I love their shops and their usual customer service, so hugely disappointed that they are selling the exact same thing something I can get much cheaper.

Reads as JL probably pulling out of the resellers market .

The OP needs to investigate their WiFi first .

Zen have always been highly rated but expensive .
