It is possible to buy without an invitation, but you save about £30 or so if you have one (the "invitation" thing is basically nothing more than an old-fashioned "recommend a friend" discount packaged up as something new and exciting).
However I've just seen that it's possible to buy one for £3 on eBay so I'll probably just do that.0 -

I wouldn't advise buying via that amazon link. Lots of bad stories in those reviews for that particular seller about chinese versions not connecting to the networks.0 -
