Orange signal deterioration

I am using an old PAYG phone (Nokia 3410 2G) with an Orange SIM card. Over the past few months I have noticed that the signal has deteriorated, not just in my home town but in other areas. For a lot of the time, the phone is unusable

I initially thought "it must be the phone". It isn't. I have 2 identical phones and the problem is exactly the same with them.

I thought that with EE combining both Orange and T Mobile masts, then if anything, the signal should be better.

However I have just read an article which states that EE has decommissioned some masts ("network rationalisation").

A call to Orange was fruitless, they made vague noises about changes to my local mast until I told them this is widespread

Has anyone else encountered signal problems?
