New boiler - but which one?

Eighth Anniversary Combo Breaker
I need a new boiler in my flat but am stuck choosing one. The first boiler that was recommended was the Ideal Logic+ 24kW. I understand that Ideal have a bad reputation for some models but can't find anything online that specifically faults the logic+. I have had another installer quoting for a worcester bosch which would be around an extra £260 in total. Is it worth it for the extra cost?

  • Go for the Worcester Bosch, well worth the extra you will pay. Very reliable and most of our customers go for them and don't seem to have problems.
  • neither
look at the Baxi Platinum 10 yr warentee or New Baxi Eco-Blue 5/7 yr warentee or the New Ferolli Modena
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.

Everyone you ask will tell you different.

I also think too many recomendations for Worcester Bosch are from armchair experts who have simply heard it down the internet pub:beer: so to speak.

I've just gone for another Gloworm combi, the last 1 was still fine after 17 years so I gave them another go.
No experience of any of the other brands.

Ask which is the most unreliable boiler, that may shorten your list a little, but then again.:A
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Disagree. Most WB recommenders are because they have used with little to no issues! We are 34cdi and it's excellent

I am an installer and repairer of boilers. You will be fine with a Worcester Bosch, but in my opinion there are better made boilers, better value boilers and one thing nobody says about WB boilers is how difficult they are to work on and overcomplicated at times. What is good about WB is their service/warranty backup which is the gold standard everybody tries to match....but you pay for it.

I am a big fan of the Ideal Logic. The previous Ideal combi, the Isar was indeed a disaster, but the Logic has been around five years now and is proving good value, reliable and with good backup. They have learnt their lesson. It is beautifully laid out inside compared to a W Bosch dogs breakfast and it is simple to service and repair (not that I've had to so far). They are not perfect and there have been glitches with some diverter valves and a few heat exchangers, but these have all been put right very quickly.

If you buy the logic it must be the plus model which gets a 7 year guirantee..provided its serviced. Its display panel tells you what its doing in English and I find people really like thast instead of code numbers or symbols. They have sold over a million and the feedback as far as I'm aware is good. And they are made in Gods County (Oops shouldn't have said that).

Other than those two. I'd choose Vaillant, Intergas or if you are on a budget, Baxi Duotec or Glow Worm Flexicom, or even a Vokera..the only Italian boiler I'd allow through my door.

If installed properly they should all give good service

We have an ideal logic+ and it runs beautifully and has a good range of controls. Can't comment on what you should buy, but that is my experience of a year with this boiler. It seems good value for money, and has a 7 year warranty.

The CDi is certainly one of their better offerings and i'd be happy with one in my house. But..they do split hydro blocks, their diverter motors can fail, occasionally the pcb fails, and the flow detector turbines can leak. The pressure relief valves are always in a ridiculously inaccessible place on W-Boschs for reasons best known to themselves. And I've had few gas valves fail on the earlier ones..they changed it for a different make. This is par for the course, not better or worse.

My neighbours 5 year old WB 241 junior needed a new pump and turbine and its time clock has failed only this week. The Junior is not a high quality offering in my opinion. I wouldn't have one.

I'm undecided on their new Compact, but its still very 'busy' inside the casing and hardly designed for ease of repair.

I'd never stop someone from fitting a WB as its wrong to say they are a bad boiler, as they are actually quite good. Its just they are not the bees knees that WB and Which magazine would like you to think they are.

I am treading on dangerous ground here, but my personal experience with my WB is the customer support is appalling. In a professional capacity I was recently trying to get telephone support from WB - again a dreadful service. I have a colleague with one of the large Housing Associations - they have a dim view of WB customer support. Similarly another colleague working with a large stock of Council Houses - he despairs with WB when it comes to back up.

Even my installer, who was an approved, accredited WB installer has given up with them - the arrogant attitude of WB made him move to another brand.

I accept that Which claim WB are the dog's dangly bits, but everyone I speak with says the product is good, but the service needs shaking up from the top down.

All WB staff seem to exist with a misplaced arrogance about the superiority of their products.

And I disagree with that, you simply don't know why "most" recommend, they are sheep in my view, but your own experience is what matters, so thanks.

Hmm...there is some truth in all that. There is an 'attitude' at W Bosch, but the guys at the coal face fixing them are usually fine when I have met them on site. Its what I call the BMW driver effect if thats not too controversial to say on here. They like to think they are the best, but even so I will stick to my belief they are not bad boilers and I have always received a good response when I have needed tech support.

At least they answer the tech line phone promptly...unlike some manufacturers I could name who charge you 8p a minute to be kept on hold for an hour..if they answer at all.

And its true, if an installer on their approved list falls short of their targets, they just ditch them with an email and no discussion. Not nice really when all is said and done. Everybody gets quiet times.
