Compensation for a delay to a connecting flight?

I was booked on a holiday to Prague which involved a flight from B'ham to Brussels and then there was a connecting flight onto Prague.
The flight from B'ham was delayed by about 50 minutes and as a consequence we missed our flight in Brussels - we arrived with 30 mins to spare but that was apparently not enough time for the connection.
We therefore had to wait at Brussels Airport for 8 hours till the next flight to Prague.
So whilst the first plane was only delayed for less than an hour the consequence on the connecting flight was a delay of 8 hours.
The EU info on compensation doesn't seem all that clear on this type of scenario - does anyone know where I might stand with a claim on this one.
The flight from B'ham was operated by Flybe ON BEHALF of Brussels Airlines and the onward flight from Brussels to Prague was with Brussels Airlines

It's very clear. Search this firum for the Folkerts (v Air France) case. Unless your delay was caused by extraordinary circumstances then you will have a claim.0
