My son has Down's Syndrome and a number of medical conditions. He loves horticulture at school, but not being a gardener, our back garden was paved many years before he was born. It isn't really suitable for growing things, and I don't have the money to buy raised beds (or the ability to make them!).
I applied for a grant for my son, to have raised beds in the garden. He really wants to grow carrots (his favourite vegetable). We passed the first round, and were told that although a decision will be made before Christmas, it would be early next year before we are informed. There are only a certain number of applications that can be awarded, as obviously funds are limited.
Well, today I have had an email to say that our application has been successful! I'll receive more details in the new year, but we've already had a visit from the charity last month. My son was offered a lot more than the two raised beds that we had asked for - their policy is to completely redo the garden, and as I was looking to my son's future needs, they have developed it further.
I'm delighted, as this will make a big difference to my son. Growing vegetables and herbs is something that he can manage to achieve, and he enjoys it. I know that we are lucky to be successful, and what a great time of year to find out!

Hi, yes what great news, i am so glad the offer was more than the two raised beds. It imo would have been a shame to only do the two beds. Happy summer days for your all now.0
