I have tried this idea, but I always end up too hot and/or with the camisole bunched up around my middle - the sort of clothes I wear a lot are stretchy jersey so don't sit well on a camisole underneath. Thanks for the suggestion though.

I wear a lot of stretchy jersey with vests and camis. So I know it works. :)

I'd say the bunching up issue IME is a sizing one. You can also wear a full slip, which solves it if its not a sizing problem for you, and there are plain topped ones about. Underwear under such dresses tends to be flattering anyway. :)

Crop vest tops or crop boob tubes work for me. They stop just below the bra line so there is no fabric bunching around the waist and crop vest tops in particular don't slide down because they have straps :)

ASOS tends to be a good source - I wear them under wrap dresses and any tops at work so I don't appear unprofessional!

I came across this website through my friend Sheila's Facebook page:

Maybe the cropped cap sleeve top is the nearest thing to a modesty panel:

  • Has no-one had any success with the little inset panels at all?

    :(

I wear them sometimes. I tuck the bottom of the panel underneath my bra (so pull it up underneath the wire, iyswim). That way they stay put, but sometimes I then get a crease down the middle, which I tolerate (mostly). I think that's boob size-dependent, though, so you might be OK.
  • How about cutting a piece of fabric to size, hemming it, and safety pinning it in place? If you place the pins right, they'll be almost invisible. Or tack it on and clip them out afterwards?

I got so sick of one of my dresses slipping down I sewed one in permanently >.<

This might work - thank you! I hadn't thought of crop-type tops, brilliant idea!

I have a smallish waist, which I why I usually end up with 'bunching' with full camisole tops as they tend to have too much material there - but stretchy camisole tops tend to stop whatever I wear over it from moving or laying normally. The crop tops would work, as then no material around the waist - I like this idea a lot!

Many thanks for this, I really hadn't considered crop tops at all.

That looks great - I am going to order one of the cropped cap sleeve tops as I think that should be perfect! Thank you so much for this!

This might be beyond my (less than basic) sewing skills, but it is worth a try thank you. I did buy one 'panel' from eBay which is basically a triangle of fabric that you stick into the sides of your top with double sided tape, but the fabric for this turned out to be a sort of shiny black satin which creased easily and looked very different from the clothes I was trying to wear it with. So not a huge success.

There must be a business opportunity here for some MSE person who can design and sew modesty panels that actually work - get your thinking caps on ladies! I expect to see a design on Dragons Den in 2015....

I always wear a vest top or camisole underneath. I hate low cut tops but often like the basic shape or pattern on one so buy it and wear something underneath.

  • I have just bought one of the 'Pure' cap sleeved cropped tops to try, so I will report back on how successful this is.

In true money saving style, this thread has saved me wasting lots of money on ordering various other different 'panel' options to try, so many thanks to all!
