Refund from BT

Recently I received my quarterly phone bill from BT and there was a service on it that I could not trace on previous bills.
So I called BT (after a struggle of trying to find the correct department on their 'press this, press that' system).
The operator confirmed it had not been on previous accounts.
So I asked for it to be cancelled and, as the disputed service was for the coming three months, asked for a refund. This was agreed and the operator said there would be credit on my next bill.
After I cleared the call I thought 'hang on,old man, you've been had'. they've got your money for the next three months.
So I emailed a complaint comparing their bill to an energy bill, in which case (when a customer tells the energy company a reading is incorrect) I receive a new corrected bill.
The answer was basically that the account/bill was produced automatically and an amended bill could/would not be produced.
The amount is fairly small ( around £5) but if BT have put this charge, or similar unwanted charges, on lots of peoples accounts, they are getting use of that money for(in my case) 3 months.
I say just give me two tin cans and a piece of string!!!
