Tiscali dial up connection speed slashed!

Since changing my calls provider to Tiscali last week, my connection speed has halved to 28000kbps as opposed to 45000. I downloaded Accelerator and it helps but i'm going nuts. Can anyone more technically minded than me shed some light on this and am i stuck with it this way as long as i'm with Tiscali?
Thanks

Yes, it was very fast until the day I switched from BT to Tiscali for my home calls whereupon it dropped to 20000 odds. The reason I switched toTiscali for calls was because I was so pleased with their Internet service!!0

By changing to Tiscali do you mean it's a BT line with Tiscali doing the billing? Or it's a Tiscali line?
If the former and nothing else has changed such as using a different modem/modem cable/extension lead etc and there is no noticeable noise on the line it is possible BT have changed you to a DACS line, coincidently when you moved to Tiscali. It's a method of getting two lines from one but causes problems with modem connections. If someone beside you wanted a line and there were not enough BT would use DACS. Might be worth calling 151 to ask.0 -
There are compatibilty issues with some modems. Do you have an Intel modem by any chance?
My ISP changed my dial-up number and it accessed different modem racks; they suggested a modem change, and pointed me to forums about my modem. I was lucky to find a cheap one in the returns at PCWorld, and then the speed was fine.

If you mean Google Accelerator, it has some major security risks. So if you've entered any passwords then potentially people could access themMurphy's No More Pies Club #209

Thanks for those suggestions. It's a BT line but with Tiscali calls. My modem is Intel type though not brand name so i'll check that out. It's also Tiscali Accelerator but thanks for the warning about the Google one.

Can you call Tiscali CS without spending premium rate? Don't mention the modem to start with and see what they say; that should only affect the situation if you now have to dial a different number, so having read your post more carefully, I'm wondering if I threw in a red herring.0

Trying to contact Tiscali is an absolute nightmare.
It is all premium rate and goes through to an Indian call centre where they can hardly speak or understand english. They keep you on the line for absolutely ages talking nonsense.
You can email them but I have never had success with that either .travelover0 -
I emailed CS for calls but they referred me to the technical support at a horrendous price per min so i'll try emailing them. CS said switching calls provider would not cause the speed to slow but it's funny that it started the day I switched.0

I called BT and I don't have a DACS line but she said I was only guaranteed 21000kbps under Oftel regs. so I was lucky to get more basically (well not when i'd prevously had 45000kbps, actually). Very fishy that my problem started the day I switched calls provider, call me paranoid if you like!
