How old is this X Type and what engine is in it? They are the rustiest things every to have a Jag badge on them and even relatively young ones sills can be absolutely rotten with the plastic covers hiding fresh air. The diesels were atrocious and many of the old ones failed their first MOT on the smoke test! Eyes and ears are more important than any paperwork with an X or an S Type.
  • Check the first 2 letters of the number plate to ascertain the area it was first registered, then you could try phoning all the Jaguar dealers in that area to check their records, you could also check where the first MOT was done (google MOT history & add car reg. & V5 Doc ref No to bring this up) & if main dealer, try there, or, the garage that did the MOT as they may have serviced it. I have, in the past, phoned all the previous MOT stations to ask if the car was serviced at time of MOT.

If you are able to check the V5 Doc with the current keepers, you should be able to see the previous keeper, or first owner & wherever they lived is also an indication of the Jag Dealers to try?

It's all a long shot but worth trying, although be warned most Dealers only have records for a certain time, or don't have access to ALL dealers (they say?), some of the independents don't keep records at all?

    Good luck

if it is in A1 condition it will be worth about £1500,00 but with no service history i would be looking at nearer £1000,00

what sort of money is the guy asking for it ?

Is this a 2.1 petrol, is it 4x4 or FWD, is it fully loaded, i.e., with leather, electric pack and upgraded alloys? Unfortunately while the 4x4 estate is still sought after, if it is a saloon (I think the estates were later), with cloth and windy windows, it really is worth how much a private seller can get. Check for rust, then check again. As an 11 year old car from a private seller, without copperplate history, a top of the range car is £800-900. A base is £400-500. An untreated rusty one (unless you are handy with a mig) is to be left alone.

You have to assume there is no service history.

Main dealers will have a record if it was serviced at a main dealer but the previous owner would have gone down that route.

Nobody will be giving you a stamped book.

It can be possible to get a stamped book from the main dealer if they have carried out the work.

I bought a BMW a few years ago with no history. Phoned the BMW dealer that did the MOT and it had FSH by them from new.

They then posted me a new service book completed with the relevant dates/mileage.

If you can't validate that the service has been done and mileage genuine then I'd walk away. Far too easy for the miles to disappear and 75k sounds too low anyway. I'd much rather one that has been properly used.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.
