Hi all we are looking in to buying a jaguar x-type

I went to view the car today and im pleased with it its had only 2 owners from new now after speaking to the current owner he says the the service history has been lost by the dealers he bought the car from

Unfortunately the dealers who he bought the car from has closed down a year ago so i cannot get in touch with them,

He says the fact that the dealer could not provide the service history he used this to get money knocked the price he paid

Now my question really is that is there a way of tracing the cars history ie: Can i just call up jaguar main dealers and give the reg plate and see if there is a record of it if there is can i ask them for a replacement book with the stamps in keeping with the record the hold on they system

or

Is there really no way of tracing the service history and do i just take my chances

Id really like reply's from people who have gone down this route with or without success

As i really need facts and not just people's guesses or opinions

Thanks in advance :)

You have to assume there is no service history.

Main dealers will have a record if it was serviced at a main dealer but the previous owner would have gone down that route.

Nobody will be giving you a stamped book.

Go online and look at past MOT advisories and absolutely get a thorough HPI.

They are ten a penny anyway so why not dodge this one?

It will have been serviced at a main dealer for a least the first 3 years its only got 75k on it it does seem like its been looked after then again you dont exactly see boy racers driving around in jag's now do you

How do i find out if the main dealers have a record of it? do i just call them up with a reg number or would they need a vin number to find the car

    thanks for your help

  • They are basically a mark 3 Mondeo and the rear suspension is the big issue.
If the shock absorbers and bushes go its a a full days work for two mechanics if you can find someone to do it, the frame has to be dropped and getting at it is not an easy job .
This is often the scrap or not scrap decision time in the cars life.

So check advisory on MOT carefully.
If it mentions any play in the rear suspension, leave it.

  • Visual check is ride height, when bushes are worn the rear of the car drops and any weight or passengers really make the back end sit down.
That and any clunks or knocks from the back, so make sure the radio is off when test driving and find some road with a few bumps and listen for any thumps from the back.
Thats really the biggest hidden bill that could flag at next MOT.
Other than that and they are Ford running gear which is quite reliable

Although not bought by boy racers. They are sometimes bought and serviced in a shoestring.

As mentioned when buying keep it in mind that it may have never been serviced... All that mileage with no services..

Then go from there. Any signs of servicing? Jaguar filters etc?

I think it never being serviced at all in its life is very unlikely

It was serviced this year by a jag specialist with the mot and not done much miles since the last mot

    Thanks
