Many restaurants and bars have a licence that covers them for the sale of alcohol for consumption both on and off the premises. When applying for a premises licence, you can specify whether you wish on premises, off premises or both and many opt for the combined category simply because it makes life easier should people with to buy alcohol to take away (and the licencing fee is the same irrespective of which option you choose).0 -

Trouble is the wine you paid £14 for is only worth £4, so is it worth taking home 1/2 bottle worth £2? Dont think id be bothered. Then youve got to find a cork!1

I've taken home half bottles of wine numerous times. Last time when I went out with my parents, we polished off a bottle, ordered another one, had just started pouring it when we got a phone call emergency and had to dash. Told the waitress, paid up, shoved wine in bag and off we went to enjoy it later.
Then again, I've also shoved half-eaten desserts into my napkin and into my bag, so I really don't have any scruples about taking what I've paid for0 -
I went out with friends on Wednesday and ordered a bottle. The barman asked how many glasses, and I said "just one, don't judge me!" He laughed and said "It's fine... you can take home whatever you leave". I said "THAT wont be happening. Maybe the second bottle...."
