Taking home undrunk wine from a restaurant

    They will only have an 'On' license - which allows them to sell alcohol for consumption in the restaurant and not an 'Off' license to sell alcohol for consumption off their premises and could get in trouble for letting someone do so.


    Of course if you stick in your bag who is going to know?

    Many restaurants and bars have a licence that covers them for the sale of alcohol for consumption both on and off the premises. When applying for a premises licence, you can specify whether you wish on premises, off premises or both and many opt for the combined category simply because it makes life easier should people with to buy alcohol to take away (and the licencing fee is the same irrespective of which option you choose).

I can just see three squad cars screeching to a halt outside the restaurant and the area commander shouting out: 'You do not have to say anything but it may harm your defence if you do not mention when questioned something which you later rely on in court.     A standard bottle is a pint and a half (isn) and provides 6 standard glasses.................

    You need bigger glasses! My family has "normal" glasses (half a bottle each) and "Christmas" glasses (a bottle per glass).

    I don't go in for all that malarkey myself. I just have a long straw.

    I misread it as bringing a drunk wino home, and came in to offer my experience as a friend of mine did exactly that once!

    Trouble is the wine you paid £14 for is only worth £4, so is it worth taking home 1/2 bottle worth £2? Dont think id be bothered. Then youve got to find a cork!

    and the restaurant would be within their rights to report you to the police.

    I'm sure that would improve their relationship with customers. Why on earth would they wish to do this?

    I've taken home half bottles of wine numerous times. Last time when I went out with my parents, we polished off a bottle, ordered another one, had just started pouring it when we got a phone call emergency and had to dash. Told the waitress, paid up, shoved wine in bag and off we went to enjoy it later.

    Then again, I've also shoved half-eaten desserts into my napkin and into my bag, so I really don't have any scruples about taking what I've paid for :)

    I went out with friends on Wednesday and ordered a bottle. The barman asked how many glasses, and I said "just one, don't judge me!" He laughed and said "It's fine... you can take home whatever you leave". I said "THAT wont be happening. Maybe the second bottle...." I drank the whole second bottle too :-(
