Quick damaged item query - paypal but not ebay

Sold a Xbox console - supplied as a 'free' gift on phone contract and sold new, sealed and unused.
Buyer has bought through gumtree and, as they lived quite a distance away, have paid through paypal money request to include trackable/insured delivery.
Xbox arrives - buyer claims is allegedly faulty - and started a paypal dispute for 'Significantly not as described' - which has left me -£300 quid in paypal
Can they do this? make a claim for items bought offline? The console was new and sealed so highly unlikely to be faulty out of the box.
Have responded as such and mentioning possible damage in transit causing the issue but carphone warehouse - the supplier, have advised that the buyer should activate the manufacturers warranty and get it checked or replaced that way.
Parcelforce website advises that 'damage apparent upon opening - is the buyers responsibility to make a claim for damage'
Can someone with a much better understanding of paypal please advise me where to start - go on from here?
TIA

You sold an item and the buyer finds it faulty. Yes your liable. Its not upto the buyer to try and chase your warranty which may not be transferable anyway.
So they have no warranty.
When they send it back to you, They get a refund and you get to sort the warranty out.
Again with Parcelforce. They buyer didnt choose them or pay for them. You did so they will have a hard time chasing for a refund. Again thats your job.
I do hope its not a restricted item and you insured it for the proper amount.
Did you check the item before sending it? Serial numbers etc?Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
You will have no choice but to accept the item back and refund.
There is a possibility that you are about to be scammed. Buyer sends back a couple of bricks in a box, uploads tracking to PayPal, they are refunded and retain the Xbox.
You are left with no item and £300.00 out of pocket.0 -

Can I stop this? Is there anyway, upon return, that i can check the parcel, contents ect before I accept delivery?
Is there any way I can then make the claim for damage - seems very unlikely a £££ console is faulty out the box - possibly damaged?0 -

To put it bluntly, no. PayPal will refund even if attempted delivery is made, simply refusing the parcel will not make any difference.
If you do not receive back the Xbox, you can report it to PayPal, but it is highly unlikely they will refuse to refund the buyer.
Your next/only course of action will be to report the buyer to the Police.
There is of course the possibility that the item has been damaged in transit and if you are covered by the courier, you can make a claim.
However, this has scam written all over it, so be prepared0 -
Gumtree and a console - this usually equals a scam of some sort. Gumtree is for face to face cash sales.
PayPal rules are the same wherever it is used, and you use the word 'offline' sale which implies face to face is some way, rather than done through an ad being placed on Gumtree- so I am a bit confused as to why you needed to post it .I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards.
