Over-zealous security checks by Barclaycard?

  • I've had completely the opposite experience with Barclaycard. Yesterday I paid for two separate Australian domestic flights (about £450 and £350) and today I paid about £5500 to Emirates for flights. Not a murmur from Barclaycard, not even a request for SafeKey verification.

    Definitely not consistent.

    Ditch Barclays.

Halifax offer a far better service, and they don't mess you about all the time.

Barclays were a nightmare when I had the misfortune to use them.

No Barclays never told me that I had to use the card in person at least once a month. In fact I queried that with the Fraud team and said if that was the case I would need to register with another bank and get another card. Then they said it was it was because it was a new card not used before, rubbish I have been using it since it was issued 2 years ago and regularly make online payments with it. Then they said the "anti-fraud" rules are constantly being modified and there is no consistent set.
If they let people know what triggered the fraud prevention checks they would be helping fraudsters to avoid those checks.

I do sympathise though - I think some companies' security measures are out of step with the level of threat and cause customers more inconvenience than necessary. II suppose it's because most customers will accept the measures and as the measures protect the bank rather than the customer it will continue like this.
loose does not rhyme with choose but lose does and is the word you meant to write.

If I were to be an annoying smart-a**e, I might say that of all the card fraud related posts on this forum...

About 75% are people complaining that they are victims of card fraud
About 25% are people complaining that card companies are over zealous in their fraud measures

So which way do people want the card companies to go? More fraud checking or less?

The cost of the fraud is borne by the issuer if they can't manage to charge it back to the merchant - Fraud measures are there primarily for their benefit of the issuer NOT the user.

Barclays don't actually tell you very much at all. When I bought my airline tickets and seats online earlier this year, the transactions all appeared to go through ok. It was only when the seat reservations were not confirmed and I phoned United Airlines to check why, they said Barclays had blocked the payment (not the flights just the seats.) I then contacted Barclays who said that I needed to speak to the Fraud team and a very snotty womam said yes the seat reservations had been blocked (not the actual tickets) and she did not have to give a reason but as a special favour she would remove the block and I could try again in 3 hours! (I go to NY twice a year to see my son, same time every year).

Since then as I said I get monthly texts asking me to confirm trivial Paypal amounts.

I asked the Fraud guy today if there had been some suspicious activity on my account and he said none and my credit was excellent. I accept the need for security but it seems my name is coming up very often. My OH does not get this on his Lloyds card. How many of the readers of this get the same level of checking on their Barclays account? (Should just say I am UK citizen born here and have no criminal record and excellent credit history.)

My husband has Barclay credit card, I'm second card holder and we almost never use these cards for transactions made in person. 99.9% of all our transactions are online, mostly Amazon and some other stuff. Cards were never blocked or stopped.

However I had some annoying incidents with Lloyds debit card. It was blocked when I made car park booking which is usual transaction for me. I was told it was blocked because I made the transaction from IP address I never did before. Since then I avoid using this card for online payments as I don't want to have a hassle of calling them every time I might be in different location and using different IP.

If I had such big problems with Barclays I would apply for different card. I'm happy with MBNA and Amex service.

    bit of a crock actually

the government penalise/punish 99.98% of wholy good society because they daren't shoot the 0.02% of wrong doers - but thats the government and we cant do much about it 'cept !!!!!

but you can't penalise 99.98% of your wholy good customers because they will simply fork off to a competitor that doesn't
