Wireless connection with BT infinity

I've just had BT infinity installed. Line speed up to the Hub is as stated 36-37 mb.

What speed should I expect from a laptops wireless connection. I've gotten a Dell Inspiron 1525, average speed is between 10-15.
Which was pretty much the same as my old BB.

Is this par for the course etc.

It depends on how strong your wifi signal is, what type of connection you are making (wifi N or G), how you are testing, when you are testing, whether your wifi network is on the same channel as another nearby wifi network, etc.

In fact the last one is the first I would check. Get hold of inSSIDer - this'll help you see what the wifi arena is like around you. If there is a clash then adjust your Homehub to another channel. (Manually select a channel - don't use Smart Wireless ... I find this tends to follow a busy channel rather than find a quiet one).

I have BT Infinity with a connection speed around 33 mb down and 5.8 mb up. A test done just now on https://www.speedtest.net yielded 27.26 mb down and 4.89 mb up.

Thanks for that Bod, did as you said and have sofar managed to get up to 25mb. That was just trying to channel switches.
When I get the time I'll go through the list.

Turning the router may help with a stronger signal in a specific location .

The Home Hub 5 supplied with Infinity isn't bad. Depending on age, the Dell may be limited to connecting on 2.4Ghz band with 802.11g so 25Mbps is likely the best you'll get from the laptop.

I'm getting 31Mbps on infinity with a 3 year old Dell.

A quick check of the specs on the web suggests that it is a decent wireless card. If it isn't getting close to line speed then that must be down to either distance or interference.

Just tested my speeds and I have 12.97 down and 1.00 up. I'm on BT Infinity. I live in North Wales and Superfast is due to be up and running at the end of this month. Please tell me that this will improve things!! xx

Are those figures from the Master Socket ??

You should check what the link speed is between the laptop and the router. If that is much greater than what Speedtest etc. is reporting, then the broadband is the bottleneck.

I get 450Mbps to the router (5Ghz, 802.11ac), but broadband is between 40 and 50Mbps depending on the load on the Virgin cable.
