But the question is how long will the computers take to see it is insured on their system after you take the policy out?

I've got a feeling that the online tax system no longer checks for insurance. I can't remember where I read but will try and find it.

*edit* It looks like the Post Office no longer require proof of insurance either (unless you are in Northern Ireland).

    *edit2* http://www.postoffice.co.uk/vehicle-tax/changes

"Is it true that it’s no longer necessary to bring a Certificate of Motor Insurance to the Post Office when renewing Car Tax?

You should bring whatever associated documents DVLA specify on your reminder. In terms of insurance, customers in England, Scotland and Wales do not need to present Insurance Certificates. Customers in Northern Ireland are still required to produce a valid Insurance Certificate when taxing a vehicle."

I did what you're proposing a month ago. I took out insurance on the preceding Friday (so not enough time to get on the database) and when concluding the purchase, I taxed it online.

One word of caution, when you tax the vehicle use the reference number from the Green new keepers section of the V5, otherwise when the paperwork gets processed the vendor will receive a refund of the tax that you've purchased.

Which is the only bit of the V5C you should have - the rest of it should be with the seller to send to DVLA.

Go to church like you know you should and buy it on Monday.

Only church near me is the Church tavern. Will that be OK?

Maybe I'm missing something; if you buy on a Sunday, the car still has the previous owner's tax. They notify change of keeper by post, the earliest that gets to DVLA could be Tuesday morning. If you try to tax the car on Sunday online or on Monday in a Post Office, system says 'tax not due' as it's still taxed.
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....

Good point that it will still be taxed for a while, until the V5 is processed. But surely the new owner must be able to tax it prior to the original owners refund? What if the original owner was lazy and didn't send the V5 in for a few weeks? How would the new owner know when it was ready to be taxed?

Or they may have already applied for the tax refund....

  • This new system has so many different possibilities in terms of when the previous owner might or might not decide to send off the log book etc etc, its a flawed, complicated and irritating system.

Nothing wrong with how it was done previously.
