I know its the time of goodwill to all men and all that and I will probably come across as being mean and uncaring when Im really not! - But


Im sick of having my emotion played on and almost feeling 'blackmailed' every time I have my evening meal.


Every night is the same - homeless people, starving people, ill children, penguins, tigers etc and the 'Salvation Army' wanting 'just' £19 (where do they get that figure from?)


I know charities need to push people to give and I do. I have a couple of charities very close to my heart for specific reasons and I support them as much as I can. but I do find it a bit much to have this continuous asking for money non stop.


How many people have £19 to spare at this time of year anyway? Why not let you donate whatever you like. If I wanted to donate £5 or £10 are they going to refuse it!

The donations have to be ongoing, otherwise, how are the charities going to help?
If you're feeling uncomfortable just change the channel or switch off.

BTW, The Salvation Army does brilliant work and most of them are Volunteers.

I just donate to the charities I choose and treat the heartstring pulling adverts like the adverts for things I don't want. I think that the Salvation Army are taking the wotsit asking for £19 it's more than many people can spare and it makes people feel guilty.

The other thing I am getting so confused (?) about is food banks. Why are they becoming so 'popular' now? They seem to have sprung up from nowhere?

How much does advertising on TV cost charities, I can't believe they get free ad time.

There's a lot more need. The increase in people needing to use food banks has gone up by around 160% over the last year. It has a lot to do with the changes to benefits. (see http://www.trusselltrust.org/foodbank-figures-top-900000)

Know what you mean as it puts you off your meal.

Of course the simplest method is the OFF button on your remote control, particularly when having an evening meal. It works wonders for me, no distractions from enjoying my meal, no risk of seeing anything grotesque enough to stop eating completely and no chance of seeing any charities on the screen.

Whats this time of year to do with NOT having £19 spare ? If you have it spare any other month then you are spending money on 'things' . Hand on heart can you honestly say if you have money to spend on extra food , drink or stuff is your need greater then the people being helped by those charities

I dont have a TV so I dont see these ads but I can see it from both sides. I worked and volunteered for charities for a long time.

I sponsor a child in albania through world vision and they are forever asking me if I can give more, I cant afford to.

What I do is, I donate to charity shops, all my unwanted books, magazines and clothes go there including stuff thats not fit for sale as they get money for the rag.

Theres also a barnardos in my home town that sells all its clothes for 99p and Ive spent about £40 in there this year

I do what I can. You can't give them all, but if the ads are bothering you, switch over.

Also, there have been times when Ive been emailed by a charity and asked to give a certain amount, but Ive only been able to afford 2 or 3 quid and that hasnt been a problem, giving a smaller amount.
