I think they get discounted ad time / space (media-dependent of course).lincroft1710 wrote: »How much does advertising on TV cost charities, I can't believe they get free ad time.0 -
But it does stop me from watching Top Gear on Dave or NCIS on 5 USA / CBS ActionKnow what you mean as it puts you off your meal.
Of course the simplest method is the OFF button on your remote control, particularly when having an evening meal. It works wonders for me, no distractions from enjoying my meal, no risk of seeing anything grotesque enough to stop eating completely and no chance of seeing any charities on the screen.

Britain is the most charitable nation in the developed world so it is only to be expected that Britain is targeted by charities so much, I sometimes wonder if we were to be beset by some terrible disaster whether any other countries would be prepared to donate to us but I guess that thought is uncharitable.0

The other thing I am getting so confused (?) about is food banks. Why are they becoming so 'popular' now? They seem to have sprung up from nowhere?
Yes I too am confused about this. With the welfare state nobody should be going hungry. Benefits are provided to people in need. Food is a basic need along with shelter and warmth and the benefit money would cover that. So are food banks just encouraging people to spend money on other things then go get for for free?
People who use them - are we to expect that they have spent every other pound of theirs SOLELY on shelter, water, heat and light? I seriously doubt it.0 -
This^^^ I've wondered if the reason more people are using food banks is because more people have realised there's free food to be had . . .People who use them - are we to expect that they have spent every other pound of theirs SOLELY on shelter, water, heat and light? I seriously doubt it.0 -
Doesn't bother me...it's not like it forces you to donate.
Just switch channel, and move on with your life.0 -
Anyone been watching Skint on C5 (I think) this week? It tells you everything you need to know about why people use food banks, and sorry but I don't mean that in a "poor people in dreadful situations" kind of way, as almost all of them have brought it on themselves.
I expect the glut of charity appeal ads at this time of year is because lots of people are fed up with the ritual of sending Christmas cards, and would rather donate to charity instead. Maybe someone has calculated that £19 is the average amount people spend on sending cards!
I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

The biggest charity in this country is the government. They distribute billions to the needy, and not so needy, (and a few more billions to the fraudsters as well lol) every week.
And I donate enough to them to be more than charitable!!0 -

You said this in a better way than I could have, but is exactly what I meant.
