Problem with 1st Central Insurance

Hello, just wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation or has any advice for me..
Im half way into my second year with 1st Central Insurance. The first year I was insured on a Daewoo. When the policy expired back in April I had changed cars to a Ford Focus.
This next part is where it gets abit tricky ... I called them up to notify change of vehicle and ask for a quote for my new car. They gave me a price over the phone but I really cant remember if i agreed that price or told them I would get insurance elsewhere.
A few days after i logged into my online account with 1st Central Insurance and saw that I had a new policy for my new Ford Focus. It had a start date of april 2014 to april 2015. I could see my Daewoo policy and also another quote i had been given for another car a while back, as well as policy details for the Ford.
This is where I went wrong as i assumed they had insured my new car.Fast forward to 2 weeks ago and I got a letter out of the blue from 1st Central asking for numerous documents driving licence, proof of ownership etc.. I photographed these the other day and emailed them off. I also got a letter this morning from the DVLA, a failure to insure notice, telling me ive incurred a 100 pound fine (50 if i pay by mid January).
Looking back I should of called them up to ask what this policy that appeared on my online account was all about.Instead i assumed there was no issue. It clearly says I have a policy for the Ford Focus, and not a quote. Ive also been paying £30 a month for it. I did call them the other day but its such a nightmare, i was on the phone literally for two hours being on hold and talking to many different staff members, which puts me off ever calling them back.
Im not sure what to do. I can dispute this fine from the DVLA but it might just be a waste of time. Im half tempted to cancel whatever insurance i have with 1st central, which will cost, and get insurance somewhere else. But another thought is if i havnt had insurance this whole time, am i allowed to ask for my money back ive payed since April? If thats the case id use that to pay off the DVLA fine and buy new insurance.
IF you took the time to read all that then many thanks, and I hope you can help me!

To start resolving this you first need to see if your car is insured. Use askmid.
If not then keep it off road till you resolve this!0 -
What vehicle do you have listed on your policy schedule?
You cannot remember if you accepted their quote or told them you would get insured elsewhere. Did you get insurance elsewhere?Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

No I didn't, I went to get some quotes online, logged into my 1st central account and saw a policy set up for the Ford Focus.
So there's a page that says Ford Focus Policy, with a ref number and start/end date, going through the online paperwork for it i can see that it is in fact for the old Daewoo. I can see the number plate for it on the policy schedule. But the main tab says Ford Focus.
Seems to me there's been a glitch somewhere along the lines on the website. It doesnt look to me like im insured and I wish I dug a little deeper back when i spotted it instead of taking it at face value.
Im wondering if its an idea to take up a policy somewhere now as i need to drive my car for work etc, Im not made of money plus its right on top of Christmas but I need to use my car!0
