Swapping Networks & Keeping Number

Options
I want to transfer to a new network and keep my number.
Its might be a simple questions but after being with the same network for 10+ years I think things are easier now then when I last did it.
Am I right in thinking I
1) Get PAC code.
2) order a new phone (Mobile Phones Direct).
3) When it arrives call the new provider and give them my details
4) wait 24-48 hours for new phone to start working with old number?

My current contract is sim only so at minimal cost so Im happy to transfer asap. I presume I will have to pay for 30 days notice, but can I transfer earlier?

Thanks for your help

More or less right, in some cases you give the PAC when you order the phone but the process is the same.

Remember you cannot ask for a PAC and have a cancellation in effect, so if you ask for a PAC and then decide not to use it the contract will continue.

You also cannot transfer to the same network, ie get a better deal through a 3rd party and use a PAC if you want to do that to go via a different network and a PAYG sim card.
