When to buy sim-free handsets?

I'm looking to get a Sony Xperia Z3 Compact as a sim-free phone - is there a good time to buy (apart from when the phone is prehistoric - thank you)? Are sim-free phones likely to be on sale after Xmas or do they just gradually reduce in value?

I would keep an eye on HotUKDeals. If you use their app you can set up an alert for when your chosen item is posted in a deal. I don't know how well they work though, I don't use them.

I keep an eye on the tech review/gadget websites like techradar.com to see when a new model is due as that's when prices seem to reduce.

That said, you'll never buy one in that case because models change so quickly! recombu.com suggests the Z4 compact may be out in March...?
