nv4_disp problem?

Hi,

Had problems with my laptop screen and then the dreaded blue screen error! Sometimes turning the laptop on the screen doesn't come on but the laptop boots up as normal. When i have got the screen on i've searched for this problem and tried a few things.

The main problem i have seen is with the Nvidia geforce go 7800 and Dell laptops is this problem occurs around 18 months after purchase which is a bout right for me too. I've tried uninstalling the drivers and downloading the new ones but they won't be accepted. At the minute on using generic XP drivers which allows me to use the laptop without too many problems(not great but at least it works), if i accept the Nvidia drivers is goes all blurry and the blue screen appears.

Reading up says there might be a fan problem or the card itself? Never opened up a laptop before, is it easy? Is the card/fan easy to change if it gets that bad?

Any other ideas to try before it gets that far?

Cheers

No it's not that easy and no it's not that easy to change a fan either. It can be done with patience and correct tools/ diagrams (some screws are hidden) but some of the fans can be a touch expensive if you buy them from manufacturer. Have you made sure that you have completely removed all tools from the lappy as some do not remove all registry entries etc?
    Could try this:

and then download a clean set of drivers and try again.

Thanks, tried that and then tried to install the drivers, no luck. Did it again and tried to install some older drivers and still no luck! Can't work out why it won't accept Nvidia drivers?

    Any more idea's guys?

Sometimes it needs the drivers direct from the manufacturer of the laptop/ PC as they have a habit of cutting things down or only using the basic chipsets.

Spoke too soon so it seems! :(

Laptop has been fine for 24hrs then just an hour ago the screen went funny and went off to be greeted by the blue error screen, now everytime i turn the laptop on it begins to boot up as normal but the screen doesn't work at all, so i can't even use safe mode.

Does this mean the death of my graphics card? Anyone out there know?

If so, how much for a new one(similar to what i already have) and how easy is it to swap?

    Cheers

so, does anything come on screen when you switch it on?

    bios screen etc?

do you have an external screen you could plug in?
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

Thanks for the reply albertross, if i try to turn the laptop on it boots up as normal everytime but only 1 in about 20 goes(if i'm lucky) does the screen come on.

It then either boots up as normal and i can use it for a short while, with it very slow and jerky, and also lots of strange lines appear, or the blue screen appears with nv4_disp screen.

I have tried using my desktop screen but altho it comes on the colours and lines appear on this and can't really see very clearly.

Does this mean anything? Not sure if it helps but if you think the graphics card has gone can you tell me how much they are to buy(best place?) and if they are easy to install or do i need to go to a shop?
