Can you still play and finish dominoes with a missing double 4s tile ?

Hi all,

Via a charity store, I bought for £3 the following boad games : backgammon (never played this before and really looking forward to it over Xmas with the family), cribbage and chess as well as some poker dice and some dominoes tiles.

However I have just realised that with the dominoes that they are missing a 'double 4s tile'. So can someone please advise me whether you can you still play and finish dominoes with a missing double 4s tile ? For info, I haven't played dominoes for years.

I am really pleased with this deal so ain't too worried if I can't complete dominoes with the missing tile but would be grateful for some advice.

Many thanks

You can still play and finish
  • Hi,

yes fine, as long as all players know it is missing.

Better a double being missing than a 5/3, 6/1, etc, because then you would have a blocked end.

I noticed that when I posted earlier, was just pleased to answer a 'techie' question. ;)

Why not <gasp!> create your own double-4 tile?
This would entirely solve the problem.

It would be very difficult to make one that looked identical to the rest so it would stick out like a sore thumb.

Far easier to buy another cheap full set of dominoes.
A man walked into a car showroom.
He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".

    This.

    A 4:4 tile could go between, say, a 1:4 tile and a 4:2 tile.
Without the 4:4 tile the 4:2 tile could follow the 1:4 tile directly.

Since the OP has already got the set of dominoes from a charity shop, does he care about a replacement domino standing out like a sore thumb? It would make a very simple woodworking project - a small rectangular piece of wood, black paint, a carefully-positioned drill to make the shallow drill holes for the spots and some white paint.
  • Hi all,

Thanks for the meaninful replies, which I have thanked personally. For the other replies, I have not given any thanks not surprisingly.
