Payphones

Forgotten your mobile, run out of credit or has it got low battery?

Then you'll probably end up using a payphone!

Well if you do and live in Manchester,Bolton,Bradford,York,Leeds or Leicester and few more places, then don't use the BT payphones for quick calls.

BT and Spectrum Interactive have now increased the minimum call charge to 40p.

Therefore, use those orange topped Interphone kiosks, those payphones still have the minimum call charge at 20p and Interphone payphones also give you more talktime when calling mobiles. Interphone kiosks are owned by Infolines Public Networks limited. There are now only 144 of these kiosks left around the UK.

However, if you are a pay as you go mobile user and want to make 5 minute or more phone call to a landline, then use BT's payphones! It costs 40p for a 20 minute call which is equivalent to 2p per minute.

And never call 08 numbers from mobiles! T-Mobile charges 40p per minute to call all 08 numbers,Orange charges 25p per minute for call 080,084 and 0870 numbers. Payphones charge as little as 10p per minute giving you more calltime. And payphones do not charge you for making calls to freephone 0500,0800 and 0808 numbers.

But you can use the Predial access numbers 0200 222 0700/0900 out of your inclusive minutes to call freephone numbers.

If it wasn't for my ADSL broadbad I would have dumped BT a long time ago.

It's abut time mobile operators increased their download limits to something sensible like 20GB a month. If they did I would have Vodafone.

Data is paid for by amount transferred, thats how your ISP will be charged. I'm always suprised we haven't gone the other way and pay for the transfered amount on home broadband like on a mobile rather than the "unlimited" (subject to fair use) type connections we have.

No-one needs 20GB on a mopbile device, most people don;t hit the 500MB that tends to be common

I mean to use the phone under tethering or a USB mobile dongle. The limits are rubbish for that.

Just seen a BT Payphone in my town centre with a new sign advising the minimum fee is now 60p.

It "helpfully" showed the combinations of coins that would be accepted to make up the 60p (I can imagine many people just shoving a pound in).

Can't find any reference to this price increase anywhere online, even on the BT Payphones website. Exactly 10 years ago the minimum charge was... 10p.

    How's that for inflation!

I feel sorry for the Cub Scouts. As part of them 'being prepared', they have to carry enough for a phone call at a phone box. No wonder there was a credit crunch!

Tethering breaks the terms and conditions of most providers though, usually it's an extra service to do so.

Data cost money, if you are willing to pay for it the mobile co's will let you use it but bear in mind that the masts can only transmit so much data per second. If everyone did this the data traffic the volume of data would mean you'd get such low throughput then it would be unworkable.
