Dispute Over 02 Contract Bill

I had a 2-year contract with O2 that I used for a little over a year before having to move abroad suddenly. I stupidly thought that if I stopped using the phone, they wouldn’t charge me for the rest of the contract. I’ve recently moved back to the UK and started a new phone contract with Vodaphone and O2 has somehow found me at my new address. I think I might have changed my address on the O2 account to the address I used as the “previous address” for setting up my Vodaphone account. Either that, or when I gave my passport as proof of ID, that was linked to my old O2 account.

Anyway, they have sent me a bill for over £500 through a debt collector called Lowell Group (Lowell Portfolio I Ltd). The letter includes a letter from O2 saying Lowell has purchased the debt I owe O2 and that I will need to find a way to repay through Lowell. What next steps should I take? I think the charge is unreasonable, since I didn’t use the phone at all during the period for which they are charging me. Can I contest this, or do I need to just go ahead and contact Lowell to start making repayments?

    The contract was available to use by you whether you chose to or not is of no concern to O2 and you would be unable to contest it.
    If there have been charges added by Lowell's that you feel are unfair you may be able to contest those but you will not find it easy
