Is it OK to sell hotel toiletries on eBay?

This week's MoneySaver who wants advice asks...

Is it ethical to sell complimentary toiletries taken from hotels, B&Bs, etc, on eBay? I've recently come across several such items being sold on eBay and was thinking I could make a bit of extra cash doing the same as I stay in hotels a lot for work.

You paid for them, they belong to you.

Although you call them "complimentary" they are included in the price you paid

It's the same as punting onto Ebay the "complimentary" toiletry bags the airlines hand out.

To be honest if it isn't something that comes from the human body or something illegal/fake it is pretty much fair game IMO!

Whilst personally I couldn't be bothered (by the time you've added postage and package - is it really worth your time?) I don't see anything wrong with it.

You've paid for your hotel room - they're yours to keep :)

Do you also take the tea and coffee sachets and butter and jam pots? I can't believe people take things from hotels and b and b's and then sell them. To me it's totally wrong.

    Because ...
  • I assume you must be thinking of stealing vast quantities of stuff to make you ask the question ? These items are with the compliments of the venue to make your stay pleasant . If everyone does what you want to do then the hotels , especially small establishments etc will stop supplying them , it costs them to provide these items so it would eat into profits . I think it very sad that folk today will do anything for money .

Eewww! Does that mean if I don't take the toiletries that the hotel will reuse them with another guest? How will I know that they are safe to use?:eek::eek:

Seriously though, the establishment will not go broke. These soaps are factored into the cost of your stay. That's why some chains don't include them in exchange for a cheaper stay.

I think it's wrong as these items are complimentary to your stay, same as butter, sugar, milk is complimentary to your breakfast or meals. I use what I need and leave the rest. Maybe the housemaid takes my partly used ones, I have no idea what is done with them but to sell them on, I think is morally wrong.

    No you havent!!

It's a facility you would need in a hotel
It would.very inconvenient if they were not supplied
Of course these facilities are costed in to the price just like the toilet, but MOST people are happy just to BENEFIT from the.facilities without stealing them which is as they were provided and points to the rudimentary maths based on that very fact
YOU HAVE NOT PAID FOR ALL THE SUPPLIES YOU STOLE

That said I steal them all but I know I am doing wrong and.don't try to appease my guilt with all that self-righteous claptrap
