I can't see the point of having the chip number AND owners details.
If you have the chip number a call to the database will get you the owners details.
If you have the owners details why would you need the chip number?
If you did want the chip nu be then you scan the dog.

ah.. but you need a scanner to read the chip's details. If anyone (general public I mean) were to find the dog then they wouldn't know who the owner was and it would be up to them to take the dog to say the vet to have it scanned.
Microchips aren't the answer to everything! dogs are not routinely scanned for example in traffic accidents.

I think they were referring to OP's mention of the tag needing to state the chip number on it

oops you are right- I didn't read every single word- that's what comes of scanning a post quickly. In the circumstances I am tempted to delete my post.
On reflection that is surely against data protection. If you find a dog and take it anywhere for the chip to be scanned eg the vet they will not disclose the owner's details

I know many people who not only have microchips in their much loved (and valued) dogs - but have ear tattoos as well. Ear tattoos cannot be removed.

Unfortunately, ear tattoos can be removed  I've seen it twice in my dog rescue career.

My local Council has announced the following -

"From 1 January 2015, you will no longer be issued with a dog licence tag.

Instead dogs must wear an identification tag with their microchip number and the owner’s name, address and telephone number.

Dog owners can apply for a dog licence online or by post".

To find out more about the changes to dog licensing, visit http://www.belfastcity.gov.uk/…/dogcontrol…/doglicences.aspx

With such emphasis on the "DATA PROTECTION ACT" many dog owners are wondering if the Council can enforce this??

All dogs must have a valid licence and wear identification with the name and address of their keeper, either on a tag or engraved on a collar plate.

No mention of telephone number although most people do put one on for ease of contact.

The Data Protection Act refers to a third party possessing your information and passing it on to someone else. It does not refer to how you del with yur personal information.

Names , addresses and telephone numbers are in a telephone directory.

Names and addresses are available on the electoral register.

Any letters, bills etc delivered to your house have your name and address.

TBH I wish that they would bring back the licence and enforce it. I would happily pay £50 if it helped deter irresponsible ownership.

We do similar to thorsoak on details that are on our tags ( which we go through a fair few anyway, the dogs love to lose them when walking. We are easily contactable by the information, but they do not have the full address.

Advice we were given is that the address and full name, though needed to be law abiding, does make dog napping for reward more likely.

Dog licence in NI is only £5 or £12.50 if the dog isn't neutered.

I don't see the issue with an ID tag with contact details. If mine went missing I'd want every possible chance for them to be returned. Although mine only wear collars/ID while out walking. They don't wear them in the house.

As some chips migrate and are not easily found having the chip number on the tag would cover this situation.

Information of name and address would only be given to an authorised person , not to just anybod phoning up.

Does this apply to Wales as well?

Someone told me last week it did but I can't find anything on it.
