Are Globespan the new Ryanair? Book a cheap flight with them and slag them off if its not up to business class standard :rolleyes:seems to be the latest craze. What bit of "No Frills" dont you understand ?

The hand luggage included in the 20KG allowance has ALWAYS been the rule with FlyGlobespan, you just didnt read the T&Cs natalie1980 !

I have every sympathy for passengers affected by the long delays on their long haul routes and Globespan do need to do more to answer complaints, look after passengers delayed and get their flights off on time but the luggage issue is really natalie1980's own fault.

It has always been the rule, yet has never previously been enforced in my experience.

I have flown with them many a time and have never had my hand luggage weighed, even though I was fully aware that they said it formed part of the 20kg allowance.

If you fly with them and they don't weight it any time, and then suddenly they do, then there is clearly a problem with inconsistency across their system. That is what is unfair, not that they charge, but that it is applied inconsistently depending what airport/check in desk/country you happen to be in.

Your attitude isn't particularly fitting with Martin's 'be nice to moneysavers' mantra. Yes the OP may be annoyed with Globespan, but nowhere does she say she is expecting business class for economy rates.

I have flown Globespan many times and it stipulates on the terms and conditions what the weights are and at the check in desk. Many a time it is just your luck to get your hand luggage weighed. I,ve never had minw checked before but my hubby has. Two women in front of on my last flight had excess hand luggage and they were moaning about it.They had large holdalls filled with cheap ciggies to sell when they got home and paying the excess would take away some of their profits. I think at this time they are more stringent at peak season as well.

Does that sound to you like a well enforced t&c, or is it poorly enforced and fundamentally unfair for those who are chosen to be weighed?

On what grounds are they choosing people for this? If a rule is in place it should be implemented across the board, not on the whim of the staff who are having a bad day or whatever.

Hand luggage is not handled by baggage handlers, it is carried on board by the passenger (therefore not costing the airline extra for handling time). And if hand luggage weight is so important, why then can people buy twice their weight in the duty free shop after check in, and proceed to fill every available overhead locker with that??

The next thing will be weighing individuals to see if they are a bit too heavy and have to pay a premium for their seat ;)

It may be poorly enforced, but that does not make it unfair, just lucky for those that do not get stopped.

If you do not like what is in the t & c's, then travel with another carrier. Simple.

You really have to re-think your fairness argument.

Someone who's got away without paying for excess baggage 9 times can scarcely say it's unfair when they get charged on the 10th occasion. Pretty obviously they've saved a huge amount compared to what they should rightfully have paid.

And just because someone else doesn't pay what they should contractually pay, doesn't make it unfair that you DO have to pay what you should contractually pay. Someone else's good fortune is irrelevant to your own situation.

Unfair would be if only one person out of an entire flight having their hand luggage weighed, fair is everyone having their hand luggage checked which indeed is what happened on our flight out of Glasgow when the check in staff were simply doing their job correctly.

    Hey Natalie,

I'm with you ... I don't disagree that it's in the small print, but it's not very obvious (until it happens). It's not usual to lump hand baggae in with hold baggage (I travel probably ?12? times a year on various airlines and have never heard of this before).

Not bashing the low cost airlines ... I'm typing this from Spain courtesy of a Ryan Air flight .... I just think sometimes it would be more helpful just to have one single cost (i.e. this is the whole cost of the whole flight) and to make something that is slightly unusual (i.e. when Easyjet started up they clearly advertised you were going to pay extra for your tea and coffee which was fairly unique back then) extra clear.

Thanks for the heads up though ... I'll bear this in mind

Ive flown with other airlines (Thomsonfly, MyTravel, Thomas Cook and Easyjet to name a few) and Ive never had my hand luggage weighed, plus Ive never heard of hand luggage being included in the allowance, its always been seperate. I think what PFB said though there is some sort of inconsistency, why not weigh at Glasgow then decided hey!! we're gonna weigh at Palma, I know Im not alone on this a few folk I work with have also been caught out with this, its Globespans way of leading folk into a false sense of security then making a few more quid out of folk, you just have to read the original quotes from other forums Ive seen to see that other folk are being caught out, as Ive said Ive flown with them befoe and I have never came across this ever.
  • Just done a bit of research on other low fare airlines heres what they all allow:

    thomas cook
    20kg + 5kg in hand luggage

    thomsonfly
    20kg + 10kg in hand luggage (not exceed 25kg)

    easyjet
one standard peice of hand luggage + 20kg of checked in luggage

    mytravel
20kg plus one piece of hand luggage

    bmi baby
20kg plus one piece of standard hand baggage

    ryanair
payment of a fee checked baggage allowance is 15kg
plus one piece of hand luggage not exceeding 10kg (carried on free of charge)

Looks like globespan are bucking a trend. All the other airlines let you take on hand luggage seperate from you checked in baggage. So take heed before you travel with Con Air, sorry, globespan.

Perhaps that could be more correctly phrased as:

So read the terms and conditions before you travel with any airline.

yes , just a pity you werent so thorough with your research b4 you flew with Globespan.
As you have clearly shown, all airlines have different t&cs for luggage. Globespans free 20kg may suit some people compared to ryanairs £10 rtn online charge (£20 at check in) for checked in luggage.
