In this day and age of UTube ipod TV downloads Netfix etc which are almost now essential for a comprehensive broadband experience should all providers offer unlimited rather than a cap?

For ADSL there should be a capped option for those who don't download or stream but it shouldn't be the prominent option and should carry wealth warnings. BT seem to operate their 10GB option as a trap for the unwary.
For fibre there is little point actually having it at all if you don't exceed the 40GB (iirc) cap. The only point in having high speed is to allow fast downloads or to facilitate multiple concurrent streams. The only time fibre would be worthwhile for light users is if the ADSL was less than (say) 2Mbps because you won't notice much improvement in browsing above that regardless of the speed.
I read somewhere the other day that the average BB useage is now 58GB per month. ***
*** Bottom of http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-30375854But mobile data usage - at 0.5 gigabytes (0.5GB) a month - is still tiny compared to fixed broadband usage, currently 58GB a month on average.0 -
My average is about the 500 GB mark per month.
There are people who only use their internet for the occasional Facebook or odd email here and then where an "unlimited" service would be too much so spending a bit less on broadband would be better.0 -
Why should light users be charged more than at present ??0

Aside from occasional BBC iplayer use we don't use any of the above. Our typical monthly use is around 5 GB even though we do have unlimited, but slow, broadband with Talk Talk.
It is, however, cheap so there is no advantage in trying to find a capped deal for us.0 -
Quite a few ISPs have abandoned capped tariffs anyway. Always thought BT's Infinity caps were a nonsense, even without their inability to provide true usage data !!0
