    Stamford,
    Be careful with what you are buying. From your post, it appears that you have a simple connection between your desktop computer and the ADSL line socket. This means that your desktop is responsible for connecting and maintaining the connection to your broadband provider. The only way that another person can use that connection is if (1) your desktop is turned on, and (2) you enable something called "internet connection sharing" which is too complicated to cover properly in a post, and is frequently unreliable.
    The alternative is for you to buy a wireless ADSL modem - this then connects direct to the ADSL line, and manages the boradband connection. You, and your son, can then connect to the wireless ADSL modem using your respective adapters. You can also use wired connections with most devices.
    By way of example, goto www.dlink.co.uk and take a look at model number DSL-G624T. I'm not recommending this above any other device, it's an example of the sort of device you need. It will need configuring with your broadband user, password, and a few other settings, and I strongly recommend setting up wireless security to prevent the rest of the world using your broadband connection.
    I hope this helps, BBL.

    Thanks BBL - yes you are right my broadband comes into the PC from the phone socket down a cable via a BT Voyager Router and I know I need to buy one of these wireless ADSL Modems (is a hub the same thing?) - that's what I'm looking for pointers towards

    Netgear, Belkin and D-Link appear to be three of the biggest ADSL Modem Wireless Routers. If you have a look at the PC World website there is a nice easy guide to wireless and takes you through some questions leading to a suggestion of equipment.

    Just an observation on wireless adsl moden routers, I've had a Belkin for several years, and have used their free 0800 customer support helpline a few times when there have been problems, sometimes of my making! They have always been very patience and helpful in getting me back online, If you aren't very savvy in the wonderful world of wireless, they are a godsend, And also they have a lifetime warranty, if they go wrong you get a new one for free, Alan.
    Every day when I wake up I thank the Lord I'm WELSH. .

    Just a wee note of caution. Aldi only accept returns up to one month from purchase now, no more the free and easy approach. I bought the car radio/cd recently, packed up one month and three days from purchase, Aldi didn't want to know, had to ship it back to distributor. Heard nothing since, so, 20 mile trip wasted, and one day waiting for UPS to turn up, which they eventually did at 16:45, plus a few premium rate phone calls. Result, no more electricals from Aldi, thanks. Lidl is closer anyway. Wonder if I'll ever get it back, and will it work then? If not, more aggro. Why bother?

    I've bought this PC on offer from Aldi for £399 today, but also found a similar one from Currys (hope the link works) which comes with a 19" monitor but £100 more expensive;

    http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/store/cur_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@0597456994.1186177399@@@@&BV_EngineID=cceladdljdgmgjecflgceggdhhmdgmi.0&page=Product&sku=509239

    Can someone let me know whether the above one is better or the Aldi one? I haven't yet opened up the Aldi PC, as I might even return it within the 30day period. I've got my old 15" CRT bulky monitor that I can use, but need help on the specs.

    If you just want a base unit without a monitor or printer, the Aldi unit is the better one. The Aldi unit also has more RAM than the Currys one.

    If you need everything however, get the Curry's one - getting a monitor and printer thrown in for £499 is quite good.
  • My local Aldi sold 20 USB flash drives in the first 10 minutes, all gone!

    If they tried that stunt with me I'd demand a refund under the Sale and Supply of Goods Act. One month is their interpretation of the law, but if goods are not durable, you have the right to reject them within a reasonable timescale. Rejection after 3 days more than a month, for faulty goods, is perfectly within your legal rights, and if Aldi refuse they nshould expect a visit from trading standards, or a small claim.

    Thanks for the response Josh/Chris. I'm now swayed into getting the one from Dell for less than £400 all in with a 19" Wide Flat Panel Monitor. Any ideas on whether the monitor is any good? Not really keen on a widescreen sort of monitor, but at that price, its tempting! I've still got 27days to return the Aldi PC (not opened yet). I'm not very technical with PC's so don't really know which one of these is fastest, etc. Just a basic PC which offers internet browsing, emails, word, and thats about all would be brilliant.... anything else/additional is a bonus such as a large 19" monitor :-)
