Refund from phone company which we don't want and aren't owed

Options
Today my partner checked her bank statement online and found a credit for £150ish from her old mobile phone provider. We phoned them up for them to tell us it's a credit for money they owed us and there will be a further credit for £350 coming in 14days time. I made it clear multiple times to the guy that it's a mistake and we aren't owed any money at all. He said he can't see what the money is being credited for other than overcharges. He then said "just keep quiet and keep it". Apparently there are 2 letters on there way to her detailing the amounts being credited.

I've noted the time of the call etc and know they are within their right to take the money within 6 months and can demand it back within 6 years but does this apply even when I've notified them? Other than writing them a cheque out for the money I don't know what to do as they are refusing to accept I'm not owed the money.

Buy premium bonds with the money - If they want the money back you have it - if they don't you'll still have it and maybe a prize or two on top.

See what the 2 letters say first before taking any more action.
  • We've transferred it to a savings account for the moment until the letters arrive but have no intention of spending it. I've dug out a few bills and as far as I'm aware everything tallies up so this is definitely a mistake.

I would have left it where it was for the first six months, just in case they suddenly take it back and you end up overdrawn.

Good idea about buying premium bonds with it, nice one.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
